About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact

You will play a key role in ensuring a safe and healthy work environment by conducting field inspections, safety audits, and incident investigations. Your efforts will directly support operational leaders in identifying and managing safety risks, helping to eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses.

As Part of Our Team, You Will

  • Monitor field activities and conduct safety audits to identify hazards and ensure compliance.
  • Deliver hands-on safety coaching and training to site personnel.
  • Implement safety protocols and procedures tailored to on-site conditions.
  • Support and contribute to safety programs, including fatality and incident management, injury reduction, and health & wellbeing initiatives.
  • Assist in executing the site-based Health & Safety plan.
  • Influence and support frontline leaders in safe work execution.
  • Coordinate OHS Representative programs and operationalize safety management systems.
  • Support assurance programs for Health & Safety standards and processes.

Prerequisites for Your Success in This Role

  • Knowledge of industry-recognized health & safety systems, standards, and regulations (e.g., OSHA, MSHA).
  • Experience with safety investigations, risk assessment, and change management.
  • Competency in implementing health & safety systems and standards.
  • Foundational skills in project management, data analysis, and commercial processes (budgets, planning, reporting).
  • Strong communication, influencing, and collaboration skills.
  • Self-awareness and a commitment to continuous improvement and team success.

Your Work Environment

You’ll be part of the Safety & Sustainability team, working closely with operational supervisors, H&S peers, and site personnel. The role is field-based on a 21:21 roster, requiring hands-on engagement and collaboration across disciplines to maintain a safe and productive workplace.
