Spectra Industrial Limited - a Leader in Sales, Service and Hire of Forklifts, Gensets and Industrial Supplies, is seeking organized and well experienced individuals to join our POM Workshop Team and be a part of our growing enterprise!

Position Description

Position Title: Mechanic

Company: Spectra Industrial

Location: Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

Reports To: Operations Manager / Southern Region Manager

Position Purpose

The Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, servicing, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining company vehicles, plant, and equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. The role requires a recognized mechanical trade qualification, practical workshop experience, compliance with Papua New Guinea workplace safety requirements, and the ability to complete maintenance records accurately.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Inspection, Servicing & Preventive Maintenance
  • Carry out routine inspections, servicing, lubrication, and preventive maintenance on vehicles, plant, and equipment.
  • Perform pre-start, scheduled, and breakdown maintenance in line with workshop procedures and client standards.
  • Identify worn or damaged parts and recommend timely repair or replacement.
  1. Fault Diagnosis & Repairs
  • Diagnose mechanical faults on engines, driveline, brakes, steering, suspension, and basic electrical systems.
  • Repair, overhaul, or replace defective parts and components using correct tools and workshop practices.
  • Test equipment after repair to confirm safe and reliable operating condition.
  1. Workshop Tools, Parts & Equipment Care
  • Use workshop tools, testing equipment, and manuals correctly and safely.
  • Maintain tools and workshop equipment in good condition and report defects promptly.
  • Assist with ordering, collection, and proper use of spare parts, lubricants, and consumables.
  1. Safety, Compliance & Housekeeping
  • Comply with company safety procedures, PPE requirements, toolbox talks, and Papua New Guinea workplace safety standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free workshop and work area.
  • Report hazards, incidents, unsafe equipment, and non-conformances promptly to the supervisor.
  1. Documentation & Reporting
  • Complete job cards, service reports, inspection checklists, and maintenance records accurately and on time.
  • Record parts used, work completed, and outstanding repairs clearly for workshop tracking.
  • Communicate equipment status, defects, and maintenance priorities to supervisors and relevant teams.
  1. Teamwork & Operational Support
  • Work closely with drivers, operators, stores, and workshop staff to meet operational requirements.
  • Assist apprentices or junior staff with on-the-job guidance where required.
  • Undertake additional duties, training, or site support as reasonably directed by management.
  1. Breakdown & Field Support
  • Respond to workshop or field breakdowns and carry out repairs efficiently to minimize downtime.
  • Support site-based maintenance activities where travel or roster work is required.
  • Ensure repaired vehicles and equipment are safe, roadworthy, and ready for operation.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum Grade 10 education, Grade 12 is an advantage.
  • Recognized Mechanical Tradesman Certificate in Automotive or Motor Vehicle Mechanics from a recognized institution or NATTB-certified trade qualification.
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ relevant mechanic experience in a workshop, fleet, plant, construction, mining, oil and gas, or industrial environment.
  • Sound knowledge of preventive maintenance, fault diagnosis, repair procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Experience working on light vehicles, diesel equipment, plant, or heavy equipment is highly desirable.
  • Current PNG driver’s license, preferably Class 6, is required or highly advantageous depending on operational needs.
  • Ability to read service manuals, complete workshop documentation, and work independently or as part of a team.
