POSITION TITLE: MENTAL HEALTH SUPERVISOR

CONTEXT

Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) is a private, non-profit international humanitarian organization, founded in 1971 and working in 70 countries around the world. MSF provides medical assistance to populations in crisis, regardless of race, religion, belief, or political affiliation. In PNG, MSF has been working since 2007 in Lae, Taric, Bougainville, Gulf, and NCD Provinces. MSF is now working to support the Department of Health to improve access to care for patients in JIWAKA and Highlands.

JOB PROFILE

  • The Mental Health Supervisor is a key position in the MSF Project Management team and will support the project team in implementing training and integrating Mental Health into program activities across Jimi, North Waghi, and Anglimp-South Waghi. It is preferred for the candidate to speak Jiwaka local languages, and necessary that they can work peacefully and respectfully with all tribal groups.
  • Participate in the planning, supervision, and coordination of mental health / psycho-social related services in the program in accordance with MSF standards in order to provide the most appropriate mental health support for patients. Participating in the collection of medical information (meetings, reports, articles, etc.) and data (epidemiological data, statistics, etc.).
  • Ensure psychosocial/mental health care is integrated into program development and health practitioner capacity building in JPHA, Church-based, and other organizations, that will provide wellbeing services to groups and individuals.
  • With the Mental Health Activity Manager, develop culturally appropriate models of psycho-social and mental health care for survivors of violence drawing on materials from MSF, JPHA, materials developed in PNG and other trauma-informed evidence-based sources.
  • Develop training and capacity building packages to deliver these to health staff and volunteers who deliver (or will be able to deliver) mental health care to survivors of violence.
  • Provide follow-up, support and supervision as required with participants who have participated in the training delivered by Mental Health Activity Manager, to ensure successful implementation of the training. Ability to develop culturally appropriate materials and resources for participants in trainings.
  • Ability to identify and organize Mental Health and Psycho-Social training needs in Jiwaka.
  • Ensure that patient’s confidentiality is kept and followed in all health facilities supported, and awareness of confidentiality is included in all training provided.
  • Collaborate with the program team to identify and promote referral pathways for survivors of violence and integrate these in GBV and Mental Health focused trainings and training materials.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of referral pathways for those affected by violence. Participate in monitoring and evaluation meetings of capacity building and training interventions in regard to effective outcomes for survivors of violence.
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders to advocate for the development and provision of mental health and psychological counselling services as part of integrated and wholistic care for survivors of violence.
  • Assisting with Health Promotion around Mental health and psycho-social support and counselling.

Develop database and mapping of service and community networks available to support survivors of violence.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fluent in English and Tok Pisin, both oral and written
  • Commitment, flexibility, results, stress management and teamwork
  • Degree in psycho-social or related field essential working experience with PHA and Government Health facility
  • Psycho-social counselling experience of at least 2 years.
  • Essential computer literacy (word, excel, PowerPoint, internet)
