About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact


As the Advisor, Mechanical – Shovels & Drills at Lihir Operations, you will provide critical mechanical and maintenance expertise that supports safe, reliable, and efficient asset performance. Your technical advice and hands‑on support will directly contribute to operational uptime, continuous improvement, and the capability development of the national workforce.


Working closely with Maintenance and Operations teams, you will play a key role in troubleshooting, risk management, and process optimisation while ensuring strict adherence to safety and compliance standards.

As part of our team, you will

  • Provide hands‑on technical support to Maintenance and Operations teams to resolve mechanical issues and improve asset performance
  • Coach and mentor the national workforce in maintenance, troubleshooting, and safe work practices
  • Support the investigation, diagnosis, and resolution of complex technical problems
  • Analyse operational and maintenance data to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and technical standards
  • Work closely with the maintenance team to coordinate equipment repairs and manage critical spares
  • Assist in the design, preparation, and delivery of technical training programs
  • Develop and provide practical recommendations to improve maintenance processes and reliability outcomes
  • Manage and monitor inventory for critical spare parts and equipment
  • Identify technical risks, implement mitigation measures, and continuously monitor risk controls
  • Stop unsafe work and actively always promote a strong safety culture

Prerequisites for your success in this role

  • Mechanical Trade Certificate or Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Proven experience maintaining heavy mining equipment (shovels, excavators, drills)
  • Demonstrated expat experience mentoring and developing a national workforce
  • Strong practical capability in troubleshooting, machine diagnostics, maintenance support, and process optimisation
  • Proven experience working within strict safety and compliance frameworks
  • The ability to analyse data and translate findings into actionable improvements
  • Sound risk identification and mitigation skills
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coach, influence, and work collaboratively across disciplines
  • A proactive mindset, practical judgement, and commitment to continuous improvement

Your work environment


This role is offered on a 21:21 Day / Night Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster from PNG or Australia approved point of hire to Lihir Island, PNG.


Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
