About Newmont

At Newmont, we’re not just a world-leading gold and metals producer – we’re a team united by our commitment to shaping a more inclusive, sustainable, and responsible mining industry. Joining us means becoming part of a global, diverse workforce where everyone is valued, empowered, and encouraged to grow. Our people are the heart of our success, bringing exceptional skill, integrity, and dedication to everything we do as an organization and we’re dedicated to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.

About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Lihir fishing and boating clubs provide access to pristine waters and beaches, while our onsite deli and café serve fresh local and imported produce, barista-made coffee, and freshly baked goods.

We are proud to work closely with the local Lihirian community and value its vibrant culture. Through initiatives like our School to Mine program, we offer meaningful employment, training, and development opportunities for Lihirian men and women, as well as scholarships and vocational apprenticeships. We also partner with the New Ireland Province to ensure economic benefits flow directly to the community, strengthening our commitment to sustainable development and positive local impact.

Your Impact

As a Trainer and Assessor (Processing Plant), you will play a critical role in building capability across our Process Plant Operations teams. You will design and deliver training programs that strengthen technical expertise, improve safety outcomes, and enable operational workforce to perform at their best.

Through coaching, mentoring, and on-the-job development, you will directly contribute to improving plant performance while ensuring work is carried out safely and efficiently.

As part of our team, you will

  • Develop and deliver training programs aligned to Newmont, industry, and HSE standards across process plant operations, ensuring all training materials are fit-for-purpose and compliant.
  • Provide hands-on, field-based training and coaching to operators across milling, grinding, flotation, and plant systems, delivering both theoretical and on-the-job learning in line with agreed training plans and progression pathways.
  • Mentor and support employees, including apprentices, operators, and supervisors, through continuous coaching and development, fostering capability growth and supporting succession planning into leadership roles.
  • Conduct training needs analysis in collaboration with operational leaders, updating priorities and aligning training plans to address identified capability gaps and business needs.
  • Engage closely with Supervisors, Superintendents, and Operations teams to ensure clear communication of training plans, schedules, and outcomes, maintaining strong alignment between Operations and Training.
  • Carry out field observations and actively assess workforce capability, using insights to refine and enhance training programs to ensure employees are fully developed and able to contribute to safe and efficient production.
  • Promote a culture of learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement by creating opportunities for employees to share knowledge and learn from each other.
  • Drive safe and productive behaviours through visible leadership, particularly within apprentice and trainee groups, influencing a strong safety-first culture.
  • Maintain accurate training records within the Learning Management System (LMS), monitor progress, and communicate results and feedback to participants and stakeholders.
  • Manage training resources effectively, including preparing requests for equipment and materials, while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

  • Demonstrated experience within a complex processing or plant operations environment, ideally with experience in a hydrometallurgical processing plant.
  • Strong technical knowledge across process operations, including full circuit exposure (front end, back end, milling, grinding and flotation), with sound subject matter expertise.
  • Mining experience is advantageous, with a collaborative and confident approach when engaging with both frontline teams and leadership stakeholders.
  • Relevant training and assessment qualification (e.g. Certificate III/IV in Training & Assessment or equivalent), with experience in developing training materials, curricula, and delivering structured learning programs.
  • Well-developed facilitation, presentation, and communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage, coach, and influence individuals and groups across all levels of the organisation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and learning systems, with the ability to manage training data, maintain records, and utilise learning databases effectively.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills, with the ability to interpret and customise standards (e.g. NATTB) into practical training materials, and audit compliance against those standards.
  • Sound understanding of adult learning principles, including individual and group training methodologies, and experience applying these in operational environments.
  • Knowledge of VET frameworks and processes, with the ability to align training outcomes to recognised standards and certification pathways.

Your work environment

This role is based at Lihir Operations, within a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment. You will work closely with Operations, Training, Health & Safety, and broader stakeholder groups to support workforce capability.

The position involves significant time in the field, delivering practical, hands-on training and engaging directly with teams to support real-time learning and development outcomes.

Working Conditions

This role is offered on a 21:21- day shift, Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi.
