About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact
You will use your technical expertise to drive operational efficiency and solve complex challenges, empowering maintenance and operations teams to work safely across light vehicles, medium trucks, and trailers within the Light Vehicle Workshop.
As part of our team, you will
- Support technical activities and assist maintenance and operations teams.
- Address and resolve technical issues as they arise.
- Collate and assess data to identify areas for improvement.
- Adhere to compliance with safety protocols during all technical activities.
- Liaise with the maintenance team for equipment repairs.
- Assist in preparing and executing training programs for technical staff.
- Conduct regular inspections and audits of technical processes.
- Deliver recommendations to improve technical processes.
- Enhance the skills of Ancillary Maintenance fitters through on-the-job training, capacity building, and skills transfer.
- Manage relevant risks, implement mitigation measures, and continuously monitor for new risks.
Prerequisites for your success in this role
- Trade qualification in mechanical, auto electrical, or a related field.
- Extensive experience providing technical support, troubleshooting, data analysis, safety compliance, and process optimization in a large-scale mining environment.
- Proven experience supporting operations by investigating and understanding the root causes of machine failures.
- Technical expertise in mechanical or electrical systems, with the ability to diagnose issues using scan tools and interpret both electrical schematics and mechanical layouts.
- Demonstrated experience in leading teams, providing coaching, and fostering the development and growth of the workforce.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to use practical judgment, follow procedures, and improve working methods through experience.
- Ability to build positive working relationships, communicate effectively, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, particularly in cross-cultural environments.
- Planning, analytical, and troubleshooting capabilities.
- High attention to detail and strong time management skills.
Your work environment
This is a full-time, 2-year fixed-term role on a 22:20 FIFO roster from Australia to Lihir Island, where you will work day shifts.
Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
We offer a range of recreational activities including our on-site gym and basketball court. Paid members can access the Lihir Club which has a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, restaurant/bar area and deck with amazing Pacific Ocean views! Our café and deli are available for take away coffees and snacks, as well as local and imported grocery items (inc. fresh fruit).
