Communications Officer - (Goroka Based)

CARE International in PNG is recruiting a Communications Officer based in Goroka. CARE International has been working in Papua New Guinea since 1989 and established a Country Office in late 2006. Current program focal areas for CARE PNG include Governance; Women’s Economic Empowerment; Sexual, Reproductive and Maternal Health; Education; Climate Change Adaptation; Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Preparedness and Response. CARE International in Papua New Guinea (CARE PNG) has the goal of achieving significant, positive and lasting impact on poverty and social injustice in remote rural areas through the empowerment of women and their communities, and through effective partnerships.

The Communications Officer (CO) will contribute to the delivery of effective and relevant communication of CARE activities in PNG. The CO will work closely with project staff and partners to document stories, prepare media releases and ensure consistent branding throughout all communication materials. S/he will provide support to all programs including updating projects factsheets, infographics, newsletters, brochures, document impact stories and maintain and update the calendar of communication activities and events. He/she must have good understanding of Adobe InDesign or Canva to design projects visibility materials; and must have good understanding of editing videos and capturing high resolution images. Must also be able to design staff ID cards, training certificates and knowledge about structuring content for the organization’s social media sites. Must be a team player, able to work under tight deadlines for multiples projects and be results oriented

This position is based in Goroka, but may require travel to rural, remote project sites.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications/journalism/ with a minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience and community language abilities.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience including working in media, journalism, advocacy, or communications, or in closely related external relations contexts.
  • Able to confidently advise peers and supervisors in CARE communication policies and protocols.
  • Good research and analytical skills and ability to produce quality communication products, reports and publications.
  • Strong team player and works within tight deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize media and communication requirements working with different project teams.
  • Familiar with technical affinity for media contexts including knowledge of multimedia, web and digital tools.
  • Commitment to CARE’s overall aims and policies and experience of promoting women’s rights and the interests of marginalized people in all aspects of CARE’s work.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills, in written and verbal English,
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in both Pidgin and English; and
  • Fully numerate and conversant in Microsoft Office with knowledge in Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel.
