Position: Communications Technician

About the Role
TE PNG Ltd is seeking an experienced Communications Technician who would be responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing communication systems and equipment. This includes voice, video, data, and wireless systems. The role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team in both field and office environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and maintain communication systems including radios, fiber optics, VOIP, satellite, and data networks.
- Troubleshoot and repair communication equipment such as routers, switches, antennas, transmitters, and receivers.
- Perform routine inspections, testing, and preventative maintenance to ensure optimal performance of all systems.
- Run and terminate copper, coaxial, and fiber optic cabling according to industry standards.
- Interpret technical diagrams, system blueprints, and wiring schematics.
- Document all work performed, including installations, repairs, and system upgrades.
- Collaborate with engineering, IT, and field teams to support system rollouts and enhancements.
- Ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations, codes, and company standards.
- Stay current with emerging communication technologies and recommend upgrades as needed.
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Experience with radio systems (HF, VHF, UHF, IDAS, DMR), cellular systems, or microwave communications.
- Familiarity with Cisco or other networking certifications (e.g., CCNA).
- Fiber optic splicing and testing certifications.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
- Military communications or field radio experience.
Work Environment:
- Combination of indoor office, workshop, and field environments.
- May involve travel to various sites, including remote or outdoor locations.
- Rotating on-call shifts or after-hours work may be required in some instances.
Qualifications
- Associate degree or vocational training in electronics, telecommunications, or related field preferred.
- 3+ years of experience in communications systems installation or support.
- Strong understanding of RF communications, IP networking, and fiber optic systems.
- Proficient in the use of test and measurement equipment (e.g., spectrum analyzers, TDRs, signal generators).
- Knowledge of FCC rules, EIA/TIA standards, and relevant codes.
- Ability to climb ladders, lift to 50 lbs, and work in confined or elevated spaces if required.
