POSITION TITLE: COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATOR

MSF BACKGROUND

Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) is a private, non-profit international humanitarian organization, founded in 1971 and working in 70 countries around the world. MSF delivers medical assistance to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and exclusion from health care. MSF aids people based on need irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

PROJECT CONTEXT

In PNG, MSF has been working since 2007 in Lae, Tari, Bougainville, Gulf Province, and NCD Province. In 2024, MSF started a new project in Jiwaka province with the objective of enhancing access to care for survivors of violence in Jiwaka province and is now working to support the Department of Health to improve access to care for patients in JIWAKA and Highlands.

General Role

Prepare, provide and present health education sessions to the population/patients according to MSF principles and values to promote health information through health measures and hygiene conditions as well as provide information about MSF activities to facilitate access to healthcare

Main Accountability

  • Prepare material and deliver health education sessions, messages, and topics addressed to different populations regarding hygiene, diseases and prevention.
  • Ensure all the patients and caretakers are well informed, according to protocols, about health-related issues and services provided.
  • Monitor health situation and living conditions of the population by conducting nutritional screening, collecting information related to food security, checking vaccination status of children, looking actively for any defaulters in programs that require this type of research, collecting information on number of people arriving or leaving the community, births and deaths in the community, etc.
  • Identify people with medical problems, contact the medical team and report for immediate transfer if needed. He/she must inform to the line manager about any problem encountered (population, equipment, material…).
  • Report to line manager of all results of screening and visits on a regular basis.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Conduct awareness and health education sessions according to MSF HPCE Strategy both in health facilities and communities in the project catchment area (Jiwaka province).
  • Explain the benefits and importance of timely access to medical care for survivors and inform the community about the availability of free and confidential medical care and support services for survivors available.
  • With support from the HPCE Supervisor, use a variety of methods to raise awareness and create dialogue with beneficiaries. (e.g. IEC materials, feedback tools)
  • Collect information and report back to the HPCE Supervisor about the general community context, health care needs, challenges or barriers, attitudes and perception towards SGVB in close collaboration with the VHVs and/or health staff. Conduct “Peer sessions” with VHVs in their deployment area.
  • Conduct Community Engagement sessions in the communities (community meetings, mama/papa groups, youth groups)
  • Assist and support HP Supervisor in her CE activities with stakeholders and key actors.

Other responsibilities

  • Participate in HPCE team activities and contribute to the implementation of its strategy.
  • Participate in weekly planning with the HPCE team and follow reporting and monitoring tools and mechanisms.
  • Respect and adhere to survivor centered principles, respect confidentiality and to the provision on data confidentiality and privacy.
  • Attend team meetings and perform all other validly delegated tasks under MSF JIWAKA project objectives.

Requirements

Education

  • Literacy is essential. (Grade 12 minimum)

Experience

  • Community and group facilitation is desirable in Health Sector or NGO Sector

Languages

  • Mission language (English) and local language essential (Tok Pisin/Jiwaka Local dialect).
