POSITION: Dean, Institute of Higher Education.

LOCATION: Popondetta, (Oro) Northern Province

DURATION: Three-year renewable contract with a 6-month probationary period

REMUNERATION: Competitive remuneration offered

ABOUT THE MODAWA INSTITUTE

The Modawa Institute is a newly established higher education provider in the Northern Province of PNG. The Institute formally came into being as of 1 January 2024 but builds on more than 70 years of involvement in higher education within Papua New Guinea. The Instutute is Registered with DHERST. There are three schools, each with a Head of School:

  • St Margaret’s School of Nursing and community health.
  • The Bishop Newton School of Theology.
  • The David Hand School of Teaching.

The institute seeks to develop a learning community where the various disciplines enrich each other, seeking to raise up leaders committed to excellence and innovation in their respective fields.

THE ROLE OF DEAN

The Dean will operate within the functions, roles and responsibilities outlined for the Principal in the Institute’s Canon (constitution) and under the guidance of the Chair of the Governing Council.

The Dean will have oversight of the institution, leading a team of academic, administrative and support employees. He or she will be the Executive Officer of the Council, the team leader within the Institute and its public face in the wider community. The Dean will nurture the academic life of the Institute and teach within one of its schools. He or she will maintain academic currency, model scholarship within the institute and contribute more widely to academic discussion in his or her field. The Dean may initially also be a head of school for one of the schools of the Institute.

He or she will have responsibility to oversight the administrative life of the institute, ensuring its financial and administrative integrity and ongoing viability. The Dean will be expected to encourage partners and build the financial base of the institute.

The Dean will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining and developing the ethos and vision of the college in line with Council strategies and directions.
  • Developing and leading a leadership team that will cultivate a positive environment for learning and work.
  • Collaborate closely with the other heads of schools.
  • Build the profile of the institute within the broader community and strengthen relationships with business and industry representatives, donors, other Higher Education Institutions and national and overseas partners.
  • Contributing to the scholarly life of the institute.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

The Dean will hold, appropriate post-graduate academic qualifications in the relevant field. He or she will have had significant experience in the higher education sector. The person will have experience in organisational administration, be fluent in written and spoken English, and have excellent presentation and public speaking skills. A commitment to uphold the ethos and values of the Modawa Institute is essential.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Under the Canon (constitution) of the Institute the Principal of the Institute (Dean) must be a communicant member of the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea, or of a Church in Communion with the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea. If the Dean is also a Priest, he or she must hold a licence or permission to officiate from either the Archbishop or the Bishop of Popondetta.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Remuneration: By negotiation and in accord with qualifications and experience. A house on campus will be provided. Relocation expenses by negotiation.
