About Newmont

At Newmont, we’re not just a world-leading gold and metals producer – we’re a team united by our commitment to shaping a more inclusive, sustainable, and responsible mining industry. Joining us means becoming part of a global, diverse workforce where everyone is valued, empowered, and encouraged to grow. Our people are the heart of our success, bringing exceptional skill, integrity, and dedication to everything we do as an organization and we’re dedicated to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.

About PNG mine at Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters. The dynamic Port Moresby-based team supports our Lihir operation through engagement with the national government, New Ireland provincial government, the media, industry organisations and civil society.

Your Impact

As Director of Government Affairs, you will lead the development and execution of strategic government relations initiatives that support Newmont’s operational and reputational objectives within Papua New Guinea. Your leadership will shape national and provincial engagement, influence policy, and ensure alignment with regulatory frameworks critical to the mining sector.

Success in this role requires a self-motivated, agile and strategic thinker with the ability to form and sustain a robust network of influential stakeholders across government, industry, and civil society. You will also bring a creative approach to navigating complex political landscapes, identifying innovative solutions that deliver outcomes, advance Newmont’s interests and fostering long-term partnerships.

As Part of Our Team, You Will

  • Drive and implement government relations strategies aligned with Newmont’s business goals.
  • Lead advocacy efforts and political campaigns, including those related to environmental and regulatory matters.
  • Actively build and maintain a comprehensive stakeholder map and manage high-level relationships with a wide network of stakeholders (internal and external).
  • Build and sustain support for Newmont’s interests at national and provincial levels.
  • Establish and embed governance frameworks and policies for government affairs.
  • Identify, anticipate and prioritise policy issues, reflecting Newmont policy objectives.
  • Formulate advice on complex strategic policy and government relations issues employing judgement, research and wide consultation (as appropriate).
  • Represent Newmont in senior-level government engagements and strategic forums.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team, fostering a culture of accountability, inclusion, and continuous improvement.

Prerequisites for Your Success in This Role

  • Advanced knowledge of national and provincial political systems, policies, and regulations impacting the mining industry.
  • Proven track record in delivering high quality outcomes in government relations, public policy, or political advocacy at a senior level.
  • Formal education in political science, public administration, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic campaigns and manage political risk.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities under tight timelines.
  • Excellent communication skills, flexibility and adaptability.
  • Deep understanding of stakeholder mapping and influence strategies.
  • Experience leading diverse teams and managing complex, high-stakes relationships.
  • Direction-setting on outcomes and accountability on staffing, resourcing and workflow.
  • High proficiency in MS Office and digital communication tools.

Your Work Environment

You will operate in a dynamic, high-impact environment at the intersection of business, government, and society. This role involves regular engagement with senior government officials, regulatory bodies, and internal executive leadership.

As part of Newmont’s Corporate Affairs function, you will play a key role in supporting the company’s long-term success and sustaining its social license to operate in Papua New Guinea.

Based in Port Moresby, this position presents a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on government relations and policy engagement in support of responsible mining and sustainable development in the region.
