Drafting Manager – Mechanical Services

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Drafting Manager - Mechanical Services is responsible for leading the drafting function, ensuring the delivery of high-quality design documentation, maintaining drafting standards, and supporting project delivery across HVAC and mechanical services projects.

Leadership & Team Management

• Lead, supervise, and support the drafting team to ensure efficient and accurate project delivery.
• Manage, develop, coach, and mentor drafting personnel to enhance technical capability and performance.
• Establish, implement, and maintain drafting procedures, standards, and best practices.
• Conduct performance reviews and identify training and development needs.
• Foster a collaborative and professional team environment.

Technical & Design Responsibilities

• Oversee the preparation and production of accurate 2D and 3D drawings and documentation.
• Review drawings and designs for technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements.
• Ensure all drafting work complies with relevant standards, codes, regulations, and company procedures.
• Maintain responsibility for design mark-ups and drawing revisions.
• Provide technical guidance and problem-solving support to drafting team members.
• Remain proficient in AutoCAD and other design software utilised by the business.

Project Delivery

• Coordinate drafting resources to meet project schedules and deliverables.
• Work closely with Branch Managers, Project Managers, Engineers, and Capability Team Leaders.
• Submit completed drawings and plans for engineering review and client presentation.
• Liaise with clients, consultants, contractors, and relevant authorities to ensure project compliance and accuracy.
• Assist in planning, scheduling, and monitoring drafting activities across multiple projects.
• Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with quality, safety, budget, and timeline requirements.

Systems, Quality & Continuous Improvement

• Manage and maintain drafting databases, drawing libraries, blocks, templates, and standard components.
• Support ongoing improvements to drafting systems, workflows, and document control processes.
• Liaise with IT service providers regarding CAD software administration and support.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems and associated documentation.
• Participate in audits and continuous improvement initiatives.

Commercial & Business Support

• Assist in the technical and commercial preparation of bids, tenders, and proposal documentation.
• Provide technical input during project planning and business development activities.
• Support the company in achieving operational and strategic objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Essential

• Trade Certificate, Diploma, or equivalent qualification in Drafting, Mechanical Engineering, Building Services, Engineering Design, or a related discipline.
• Minimum five (5) years' experience in mechanical services, HVAC drafting, or a related industry.
• Demonstrated experience supervising or leading drafting/design teams.
• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and other relevant CAD software.
• Strong understanding of HVAC systems and mechanical services design principles.
• Knowledge of applicable PNG and Australian Standards, Building Codes, and Regulations.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, and organisational skills.

Desirable

• Diploma or Degree qualification in Engineering, Drafting, Building Services, or a related field.
• Experience with BIM, Revit, Navisworks, or other 3D modelling platforms.
• Exposure to ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems.
• Experience in tender preparation and project coordination
