DRAFTSMAN & DOCUMENT CONTROLLER- Steel Fabrication Division
Role Overview
The Draftsman & Document Controller is a dual-function position responsible for both technical drafting (2D and 3D) and controlling the full lifecycle of engineering documentation and fabrication records. The role plays a central part in supporting the fabrication, QA/QC, and project teams by delivering accurate technical drawings and maintaining structured document workflows, registers, and filing systems.
Key Responsibilities
Drafting Duties
- Produce accurate 2D drawings and 3D models for structural steel, tanks, trailers, pipe spools, and mechanical components.
- Use AutoCAD, Solid Edge, and SolidWorks to develop drawings from design briefs or conceptual sketches.
- Generate cutting lists, Bill of Materials (BOMs), part numbering, and nesting files for fabrication.
- Assist in design revisions, field modifications, and redline drawings based on site updates.
- Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and workshop supervisors to ensure design intent is met.
- Provide as-built drawings and record updates as fabrication progresses.
Document Control Duties
- Maintain the drawing register, ensuring proper revision tracking, version control, and timely distribution.
- Organize and file all project-related documentation including material certificates, QA/QC reports, method statements, welding documents, and NDT records.
- Control the issuance and archiving of controlled documents in line with ISO 9001 principles.
- Coordinate with project teams to receive, verify, and log external technical documents and drawings.
- Support QA/QC and project teams by compiling project handover documentation and data packs.
- Ensure fabrication records are traceable and readily available for audits, inspections, and client handover.
Minimum Requirements
- Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Drafting, or a related field.
- 3+ years' experience in a fabrication or engineering environment in a dual-role or similar capacity.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Solid Edge, and SolidWorks.
- Proven experience in technical document control, preferably with ISO 9001 background.
- Knowledge of fabrication processes, welding standards, and engineering documentation.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, maintain deadlines, and manage large volumes of documentation accurately.
