Empty Container Controller
Lae | Inland Container Depot Operations
Help keep our empty-container stock accurate and depot movements controlled. Express Freight Management is seeking a reliable, detail-focused Empty Container Controller to coordinate yard activity, stock records and gate movements across our Lae ICD yards. The position works with the ICD team, drivers, shipping-line representatives, data-entry staff and reach-stacker operators.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain a current empty-container register by container number, shipping line, size and type, condition, status, yard location and movement history. Reconcile the register and IQS against physical stock through routine yard checks and scheduled stocktakes, and report variances promptly.
- Coordinate empty-container gate-ins, gate-outs, inter-yard transfers, repositioning and evacuations using approved instructions and supporting documents. Keep IQS and manual movement records accurate and up to date.
- Ensure drivers process the required DDs at the ICD2 gate office before moving or loading an empty container, regardless of its storage yard. Confirm that the movement is recorded so IQS stock remains accurate.
- Control gate-out documentation: receive and check dockets or release instructions, verify the container number and visible condition against the physical unit, complete or check the EIR, and stamp or endorse documents only after required checks are complete.
- Maintain a manual gate-out record when required and pass collected dockets and supporting records to the designated data-entry team at the required intervals, including hourly handover where the depot process requires it.
- Identify and report irregularities between documents and the physical container, including incorrect container numbers, altered or unusual dockets, missing approvals, damage or other movement exceptions. Escalate before release when a discrepancy is unresolved.
- Coordinate container location and lift requests between the ICD office, drivers and reach-stacker operators. Help locate containers for loading and provide clear container details and yard positions; do not operate lifting equipment unless separately trained and authorized.
- Promote safe storage by checking that chains and straps used in container storage are available, serviceable and correctly managed. Support daily stacking spot-checks and report unsafe or incorrect stacking to the FCL Yard Coordinator or supervisor.
- Coordinate weekly empty-container stocktakes and assist with FCL yard stocktakes when assigned. Record results clearly and follow up count differences with the relevant yard team.
- Assist with additional sealing of SPB-cleared containers when instructed, and record seal details against the relevant container and supporting documents.
- Where required and trained, confirm that Underbond containers requiring inspection or fumigation are positioned on the ground, and check physical seal numbers against Customs documents. Refer any mismatch to the supervisor; do not alter seals or release the unit without authorization.
- Keep dockets, DDs, EIRs, stocktake sheets and other movement records organized and traceable. Provide accurate updates and reports to the ICD Manager or delegate.
What you will bring
- Grade 12 completion. A certificate or diploma in logistics, transport, supply chain, business administration or a related field is an advantage.
- Experience in a container depot, transport, logistics, gate control or inventory role is an advantage. Entry-level applicants with strong potential are encouraged to apply.
- Attention to detail and confidence checking container numbers, documents, physical stock and data-entry records.
- Basic computer skills, including accurate data entry and spreadsheets, with the ability to learn IQS and company procedures.
- Clear communication and a cooperative approach with drivers, operators and office staff.
- Honesty, reliability and a strong work ethic; able to work under pressure and outdoors in a physically active depot environment while following safety instructions.
