About the role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior, Engineer - Long-Term Planning Open Pit to lead and contribute to strategic mine planning efforts. The position reports to the Open Pit Engineering Superintendent. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and optimizing long-term mine plans that align with business objectives, maximize resource recovery, and ensure sustainable and safe mining operations.
In this role, you will:
- Develop, maintain, and continuously improve long-term open pit mine
- Design pit shells, pushbacks, and phase development sequences using industry-standard software (particularly Deswik).
- Conduct strategic scheduling and pit optimization studies to guide life -of -mine planning
- Collaborate with geology, geotechnical, and hydrogeology teams to incorporate updated resource models and geotechnical parameters into mine designs.
- Assist in the preparation and reporting of mineral reserves in compliance with applicable reporting codes (particularly NI 43-101).
- Integrate economic parameters into mine plans, including costs, revenues, and discount rates.
- Perform sensitivity analyses and evaluate different mining strategies and development scenarios.
- Coordinate with short and medium-term planning teams to ensure alignment across planning horizons.
- Work closely with operations, processing, and environmental teams to ensure plans are realistic and integrated across departments.
- Mentor junior planning engineers and contribute to technical training and development initiatives.
- Lead or support pre-feasibility and feasibility studies as required.
- Maintain a high level of health, safety and environmental awareness and comply with all relevant NPL policies & procedures
About You
To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Professional Engineering (P.Eng. or equivalent) designation or eligibility is desirable.
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in open pit mine planning, with at least 3 years in a senior role.
- Strong command of mine planning software (particularly Deswik).
- Advanced understanding of mine economics, resource/reserve estimation, and geotechnical fundamentals.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skill's
Desired Attributes
Experience in large-scale open pit operations (e.g., copper, gold, iron ore, etc.).
- Familiarity with environmental, permitting, and social responsibility considerations in mine planning.
- Strong analytical mindset with attention to detail and long-term strategic thinking.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver under deadlines.
