Help keep the future of eye care in Papua New Guinea running smoothly

The Fred Hollows Foundation PNG Inc. is seeking an experienced and hands-on Facilities Officer to support the safe, reliable and effective operation of the new Papua New Guinea Centre for Eye Health

About us

The Fred Hollows Foundation PNG Inc. works to end avoidable blindness and vision impairment in Papua New Guinea by supporting quality eye care, training local eye health professionals and strengthening sustainable, locally led eye health systems.

We continue the work of the late Professor Fred Hollows, an internationally acclaimed eye surgeon and advocate for everyone’s right to high-quality and affordable eye care.

About the role

The Centre will provide eye care services to the people of Papua New Guinea while supporting the training of local doctors and nurses as ophthalmologists, eye nurses and optometrists.

Reporting to the Centre Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, upkeep and safe operation of the Centre’s building services, plant, equipment and grounds. This is a practical, hands-on role that also involves coordinating specialist contractors and preventative maintenance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conduct regular facilities inspections and coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs.
  • Undertake routine maintenance where appropriately qualified and coordinate specialist contractors when required.
  • Maintain asset registers, maintenance schedules and service records.
  • Coordinate servicing of systems including solar and battery systems, HVAC/air conditioning, backup power, water, fire and security systems and specialist equipment.
  • Respond promptly to faults, hazards and service interruptions.
  • Coordinate contractors and service providers and ensure work is completed safely and to the required standard.
  • Support procurement, inventory management and maintenance expenditure.
  • Help maintain a safe, secure and well-maintained environment for staff, patients, students and visitors.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A recognised trade qualification in electrical work or another building-services trade, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • At least three years’ post-trade experience in facilities, building services or plant maintenance, preferably in a hospital, healthcare or other complex environment.
  • Strong hands-on maintenance and fault-finding skills.
  • Experience coordinating contractors and specialist service providers.
  • Good knowledge of building services such as electrical, solar and battery systems, HVAC, backup power, water, plumbing, fire and security systems.
  • Good planning, organisational and communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.
  • A strong commitment to safety, service, integrity and accountability.
