About the role

This position facilitates the programmes and projects under the Forest Data workstream in Cool Earth partnership communities to ensure the sustainable management of forest resources. A key project that you will be responsible for is Rainforest Labs, which will work with partnership communities to monitor and collect forest data for the conservation of their land.

You will provide support and work closely with other members of the Cool Earth Forest Data team to deliver key results for measuring the impacts of Cool Earth’s programmes in partnership communities, and work together with the project coordinators and other key stakeholders for forest conservation.

As well as research and monitoring, the role involves capacity building for partnership communities, partner collaborations and knowledge sharing with stakeholders.

This is an office-based role in Alotau, Milne Bay Province.

The main responsibilities of the role include:

  • Project Management: Oversee the Rainforest Labs project in Wabumari, including planning, budgeting, implementation, and reporting.
  • Data Collection: Collect forest data using GIS tools, questionnaires, and surveys to monitor forest loss and health indicators.
  • Community Engagement: Train community members on GIS tools, facilitate participatory planning, and support data entry into monitoring dashboards.
  • Carbon Monitoring: Establish carbon plots and provide support to research partners on related projects.
  • Biodiversity Conservation: Conduct biodiversity training, provide environmental awareness, and engage with students for information sharing.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Represent Cool Earth at stakeholder workshops and consultations.
  • Data Analysis: Compile and share reports on collected data with Cool Earth and donors.
  • Mapping: Establish boundary surveys and coordinates for infrastructure development and plot land features using GIS.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Support the Programs Data Lead in collecting forest and other MEL data.
  • Safeguarding: Ensure adherence to safeguarding policies and procedures within the PNG programs team and partnerships.

The successful candidate will have the following skills and abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Biology or related field
  • Fluent in written and spoken English language
  • Proven experience in leading PNG-based conservation projects in the NGO sector
  • Experience using GIS tools for forestry or conservation uses, with specific experience using ArcGIS Online an advantage
  • High IT literacy with an ability to use Microsoft Excel for data management and data presentation
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team player
  • Knowledge of project design, work plans and execution, with experience developing and reporting against log frames
  • Understanding of and interest in the drivers of rainforest deforestation and community land use planning
  • Willingness to make regular visits to rainforest communities and occasional travel within PNG
  • Strong analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to develop training packages and deliver to target audience
  • Ability to coordinate and organise activities and work cooperatively within a team environment
