About Lihir

Our Lihir operation is located on Aniolam Island in Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland Province. As a major open-pit gold operation, Lihir plays an important role in Newmont’s global portfolio and contributes significant economic and social value to Papua New Guinea and local communities.

We are proud to work closely with the local Lihirian community and value its vibrant culture. Through initiatives like our School to Mine program, we offer meaningful employment, training, and development opportunities for Lihirian men and women, as well as scholarships and vocational apprenticeships. We also partner with the New Ireland Province to ensure economic benefits flow directly to the community, strengthening our commitment to sustainable development and positive local impact.

Your role

As the Geochemist – Geothermal, you will support the Mine Geothermal Team and broader Mine Technical Services group by delivering geochemical monitoring, analysis and interpretation across geothermal operations. Your work will help manage geothermal risk, optimise well performance and support safe, sustainable geothermal operations at Lihir.

This is a hands-on technical role suited to someone with strong analytical capability, a safety-first mindset and the ability to work collaboratively across geoscience, reservoir, operations and technical teams.

Key Responsibilities

-- Deliver accurate and timely geochemical sampling, analysis and interpretation of geothermal fluids, including steam, brine, condensate and gases.

-- Support geothermal well testing programs by analysing geochemical data to assess feed zones, reservoir conditions and well performance.

-- Contribute to geothermal risk identification and management through interpretation of fluid chemistry trends and field observations.

-- Plan and execute geochemical sampling and fieldwork safely, considering thermal hazards, gas exposure, chemical handling requirements and operational constraints.

-- Ensure personnel, visitors and contractors comply with site and geothermal-specific health, safety and environmental requirements.

-- Develop and communicate geochemical insights to support weekly and monthly geothermal and mine planning activities.

-- Provide guidance and training to technical and operational personnel in geothermal geochemistry, sampling techniques and hazard awareness.

-- Identify opportunities to optimise sampling programs, improve data quality and manage laboratory and consumable costs effectively.

Your Skills & Experience

-- Tertiary qualification in Geochemistry, Chemistry, Geology or a related discipline.

-- PNG Driver’s Licence.

-- Strong understanding of geothermal fluid sampling techniques, QA/QC protocols and laboratory data interpretation.

-- Knowledge of scaling, corrosion and gas chemistry processes in geothermal systems.

-- Strong analytical, problem-solving and data interpretation skills.

-- Proficiency in English, with strong verbal and written communication skills.

-- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data management systems for reporting and analysis.

-- Ability to work safely and effectively in a field-based operational environment.

-- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and communicate technical information clearly.

Desirable experience includes a postgraduate qualification in Geochemistry or Geothermal Science, experience in geothermal, mining or hydrothermal systems, geothermal well testing and fluid chemistry interpretation, exposure to geothermal or geotechnical monitoring systems, and experience using geochemical modelling tools.

Work Environment & Benefits

This is a full-time role based at Newmont’s Lihir operation in Papua New Guinea, working on a 21 days on / 21 days off day shift roster. You will work within Mine Technical Services, supporting the Mine Geothermal function as part of a collaborative technical team focused on safe geothermal operations, practical field execution, continuous improvement and responsible resource management.
