Newmont produces metals the world needs - safely, responsibly and with care for people, communities and the environment. With a 100+ year history, we continue to shape the future of mining through innovation and strong operational performance. By joining our inclusive, world-class team, you can help shape the future of mining and make a meaningful difference.

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Lihir fishing and boating clubs provide access to pristine waters and beaches, while our onsite deli and café serve fresh local and imported produce, barista-made coffee, and freshly baked goods.
We are proud to work closely with the local Lihirian community and value its vibrant culture. Through initiatives like our School to Mine program, we offer meaningful employment, training, and development opportunities for Lihirian men and women, as well as scholarships and vocational apprenticeships. We also partner with the New Ireland Province to ensure economic benefits flow directly to the community, strengthening our commitment to sustainable development and positive local impact.
Your Impact

As a Geometallurgist, you'll support the Metallurgy Team's Integrated Geomet Planning Program through ore sampling, test work and data collection that improves understanding of the Lihir future ore body. Your work will help inform plant performance, recovery and throughput outcomes while supporting geometallurgical testing and feedback for operational stakeholders.

As part of our team, you will
  • Assist with geometallurgical sampling, sample preparation and laboratory test work.
  • Collect, record and maintain accurate test data and laboratory records, including report-related activities.
  • Coordinate logistics for offshore test samples and geometallurgical core dispatch and laboratory shipments.
  • Support purchasing, inventory and equipment maintenance requirements for geometallurgical test work.
  • Follow laboratory procedures, safety standards and quality requirements while supporting continuous improvement of laboratory methods and practices.
Prerequisites for your success in this role
  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mineral Processing or a related discipline.
  • Some relevant industry experience, with exposure to mineral processing, metallurgy or laboratory test work.
  • Experience conducting laboratory test work and managing associated data and records.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Excel, with experience using Acquire considered advantageous.
  • Strong numerical, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and operational teams.
Your work environment

This role is offered on a 21:21 Fly-in, Fly-out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp environment, with ensuite, air-conditioned accommodation equipped with a mini fridge, television and Wi-Fi. A variety of nutritious meal options are available through the on-site catering facilities, while recreational and social amenities provide opportunities to relax and connect with colleagues while on roster.

This is a permanent role reporting to the Supervisor Geometallurgy. As an individual contributor with no direct reports, you'll work closely with laboratory personnel, plant metallurgy teams, geology teams and Newmont subject matter experts to support geometallurgical testing, data collection and operational outcomes.
