Heavy Duty Dump Truck Driver Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Heavy Duty Dump Truck Driver to join our dynamic construction and materials transport team. In this vital role, you will be the key link in our supply chain, ensuring the timely and secure delivery of essential materials that keep our projects moving forward. The ideal candidate is a reliable professional with a strong work ethic, exceptional driving skills, and a steadfast commitment to safety protocols and equipment care.

Position Overview

As a Heavy-Duty Dump Truck Driver, your primary mission is to operate and maintain heavy-duty dump trucks to transport bulk materials such as gravel, sand, topsoil, asphalt, and construction debris to and from various job sites. You will work in a fast-paced environment, often navigating challenging terrain and tight spaces, while coordinating closely with site supervisors and dispatchers to optimize delivery schedules and maintain project efficiency.

Reporting to: Fleets Coordinator

Key Responsibilities & Duties

Daily Operations & Driving

  • Safely operate a heavy-duty dump truck to transport loose materials to designated locations.
  • Manoeuvre and position the vehicle for efficient loading and unloading at pits, quarries, and construction sites.
  • Navigate public roads and private job sites, adhering to all traffic laws and on-site safety rules.
  • Perform controlled dumping of materials in specified areas as directed by site personnel.
  • Coordinate with loaders, excavators, and ground crew to ensure safe and accurate loading/unloading cycles.

Vehicle Maintenance & Safety

  • Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle, including brakes, tires, lights, hydraulics, and fluid levels.
  • Complete mandatory Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) and report any mechanical defects or safety issues immediately.
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks such as cleaning the truck, checking and adding fluids, and greasing fittings.
  • Secure all loads properly to prevent spillage during transit.
  • Maintain a clean and organized cab and logbook.

Site Coordination & Compliance

  • Communicate effectively with dispatchers and site supervisors via radio or mobile device.
  • Follow detailed delivery instructions and site-specific safety plans.
  • Ensure all documentation, including delivery tickets and hours-of-service logs, is accurately completed and submitted.
  • Represent the company professionally in all interactions with clients and the public.

Qualifications & Requirements

Mandatory Requirements

  • Valid required licence with a clean driving record.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of verifiable experience operating heavy-duty dump trucks or similar commercial vehicles.
  • Current Medical Examiner's Certificate.
  • Strong knowledge of RTA regulations and road safety rules.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience hauling construction materials in a live-bottom, end-dump, or transfer dump configuration.
  • Familiarity with operating in active construction zones and uneven terrain.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for performing minor roadside repairs and troubleshooting.
  • Proven record of safety and reliability.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This role is physically demanding and requires working in all weather conditions. Candidates must be able to:

  • Sit for extended periods and climb in and out of a tall truck cab repeatedly.
  • Perform physical tasks such as tarping loads, connecting/disconnecting trailer lines, and minor clean-up.
  • Work variable hours, including early mornings, overtime, and occasional weekends as project demands require.
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe boots, and glasses.
