Company Overview

Tolu Minerals Limited has successfully completed its exploration phase and is transitioning into underground mining operations in Papua New Guinea, with full-scale production targeted for 2027. This role is part of the build-up of operational capability across the Mobile Maintenance Department as the company moves from development into full operational status.

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Mobile Maintenance Superintendent the Surface Heavy Equipment Fitter is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of surface mobile equipment (excavators, loaders, haul trucks, graders, dozers, and other supporting plant) to ensure maximum availability and reliability of the surface equipment fleet.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, repairs, and component changeouts on surface heavy mobile equipment.
• Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic faults and carry out effective repairs in line with OEM standards.
• Conduct pre-start and post-maintenance inspections on surface plant and equipment, reporting defects and risks promptly.
• Complete job cards, condition reports, and work orders accurately and in a timely manner.
• Respond to surface equipment breakdowns, conduct field repairs, and coordinate recovery where required.
• Carry out routine condition monitoring tasks (e.g. oil sampling, undercarriage inspections) as part of preventive maintenance.
• Liaise with the Mobile Maintenance Planner on parts requirements, job scope, and scheduling of major repairs and component changeouts for best cost and availability outcomes.
• Maintain a safe and tidy work area, complying with workshop housekeeping and HSE standards.
• Participate in pre-start meetings, toolbox talks, and safety/risk assessments prior to undertaking maintenance tasks.
• Mentor and support trade assistants or apprentices where assigned.
• Comply fully with PNG Mine Safety regulations and Tolu Minerals HSE management systems.

Qualifications

• Trade certificate in Heavy Equipment Mechanics / Diesel Fitting or equivalent recognized trade qualification.
• Current PNG driver's license.
• Relevant equipment-specific OEM training (e.g. Komatsu, Caterpillar, Hitachi) advantageous.

Experience

• Minimum 3 years' post-trade experience maintaining surface heavy mobile equipment, preferably within a mining environment.
• Demonstrated experience with major component repair/changeout (engines, transmissions, final drives, hydraulics).
• Experience working in a remote or fly-in/fly-out mining operation preferred.

Skills & Competencies

• Strong mechanical aptitude and fault-finding skills across diesel engines, hydraulics, and drivetrains on heavy mobile equipment.
• Ability to interpret OEM service manuals, parts catalogues, and hydraulic/electrical schematics.
• Safe and competent use of workshop tools, lifting equipment, and diagnostic technology.
• Strong commitment to safety, with the ability to identify and manage workplace hazards.
• Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary maintenance team.

Working Conditions

• Underground and surface mining environment with exposure to heat, humidity, noise, dust, and confined spaces.
• Operates on a fixed roster of 19 days on / 9 days off.
• Required to work shift patterns including day and night shift as rostered.
• Must comply with all Tolu Minerals HSE policies, PNG Mining Safety regulations, and site-specific permit-to-work systems.
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory at all times in designated areas.
