Company Overview

Tolu Minerals Limited has successfully completed its exploration phase and is transitioning into underground mining operations in Papua New Guinea, with full-scale production targeted for 2027. This role is part of the build-up of operational capability across the Mobile Maintenance Department as the company moves from development into full operational status.

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Mobile Maintenance Superintendent the Underground Heavy Equipment Fitter is responsible for the maintenance and repair of underground mobile mining equipment (jumbos, LHDs, underground trucks, charge-up rigs, and associated plant) operating within Tolu Minerals' underground mine, ensuring equipment is maintained safely and reliably to support production and development activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled and breakdown maintenance on underground mobile equipment including LHDs, jumbos, underground haul trucks, and ancillary underground plant.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical faults on underground mobile equipment in line with OEM specifications.
  • Carry out maintenance and repairs safely within underground working conditions, including confined spaces, restricted access areas, and ground control zones.
  • Conduct pre-start checks and condition assessments on underground equipment, reporting defects through the appropriate reporting system.
  • Complete accurate job cards, work orders, and maintenance records for all underground maintenance activities.
  • Respond to underground equipment breakdowns promptly, coordinating with the Mobile Maintenance Supervisor and Underground Operations on access and ventilation requirements.
  • Liaise closely with Underground Operations (Drilling, Exploration) to coordinate equipment access and minimize disruption to production schedules.
  • Comply strictly with underground ground control, ventilation, and emergency response procedures at all times.
  • Maintain a safe, organized underground workshop/service bay area and ensure correct handling and storage of fuels, oils, and hazardous substances underground.
  • Participate in underground safety inductions, toolbox talks, and emergency response drills.

Qualifications

  • Trade certificate in Heavy Equipment Mechanics / Diesel Fitting or equivalent recognized trade qualification.
  • Underground mining induction/ticket required, or willingness and ability to obtain prior to commencement.
  • Current PNG driver's license.
  • Gas testing and underground self-rescuer training (or willingness to be trained) required.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years' post-trade experience maintaining heavy mobile equipment, with prior underground mining experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with underground LHDs, jumbos, and trucks highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience working safely within underground mine environments, including awareness of ground conditions and ventilation requirements.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong mechanical, hydraulic, and diagnostic fault-finding skills specific to underground mobile equipment.
  • Sound understanding of underground mine safety, ground control awareness, and emergency response procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively and calmly in confined, low-light, and physically demanding underground conditions.
  • Good communication and radio/communication protocol skills for coordinating work underground.
  • Strong safety mindset and ability to follow strict permit-to-work and isolation procedures.

Working Conditions

  • Underground and surface mining environment with exposure to heat, humidity, noise, dust, and confined spaces.
  • Operates on a fixed roster of 19 days on / 9 days off.
  • Required to work shift patterns including day and night shift as rostered.
  • Must comply with all Tolu Minerals HSE policies, PNG Mining Safety regulations, and site-specific permit-to-work systems.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory at all times in designated areas.
