We are seeking to recruit for the position of Refinery Specialist for our Processing – Operations Department. Reporting to the Processing Operations Superintendent, the primary role of the position is to effectively supervise and coordinate Refinery Operations to achieve Gold Production targets while ensuring a safe and secure working environment that is compliant with the company’s Safety, Security, Health and Environmental Policies.

Key roles and responsibilities include:

  • Drive Refinery administrative functions
  • Maintain Gold Room procedures, standards and policies in consultation with the Senior Plant Metallurgist
  • Coordinate implementation of management initiatives in the Refinery and ensure appropriate alignment with the department’s key strategic requirements
  • Ensure maintenance of Gold Security Standard
  • Drive decision-making while ensuring that employees are empowered to make decisions within their area of competence
  • Monitor decisions and ensure they are consistent with key production objectives
  • Maintain a smooth Refinery operation by adhering to standard Work Management both Operation and Maintenance
  • Actively manage and lead Refinery shutdown planning and implementation through engagement with the Maintenance and Planning department
  • In conjunction with the Senior Metallurgist, maintain effective use of Short Interval Controls and actively improve
  • In conjunction with the Senior Metallurgist, identify and implement improvement opportunities to improve overall Refinery functions
  • Coordinate and supervise smelting operation
  • Maintain high-level bullion production tracking, recording and reporting in line with Metallurgical Accounting and Auditing best practices
  • Monitor production and cost variances and take actions in a timely manner to reduce risks to overall metal production and budget
  • Attend and actively engage in Production, Shift Change, Weekly and Planning Meetings
  • Train and upskill Refinery Operators in all facets of Refinery operation
  • Maintain good record and reporting of Refinery reagents and consumables
  • Provide all necessary internal and external reports on safety, operation and environmental performance, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
  • Lead active participation of the team in identifying, reporting and correcting potential workplace risks and hazards
  • Ensure all employees and contractors comply with site Safety regulations, Environment and Community Relations policies
  • Actively interact with Safety, Environment and Community Relations departments regarding incidents, breaches or non-conformances within the area of responsibility
  • Maintain effective and positive communication in the workplace ensuring flow of correct and accurate information.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience required:

  • Minimum of 5–10 years of experience in smelting, including exposure to large-scale Gold-room operation and senior supervisory roles
  • Work in a high-security environment dealing with precious metals refining, Mint or high-value logistics
  • Grade 12 or equivalent; technical certification or degree in Metallurgy, Chemistry, or Supply Chain Management is highly preferred
  • Proven record in handling hazardous chemicals (e.g., fluxes, acids) and operating heavy smelting/refining machinery
  • Familiar with Bullion Production Accounting or specialized inventory tracking systems
  • Experience in high-level and accurate inventory control, auditing, and physical gold reconciliation against digital ledgers
  • Experience in Merrill-Crowe process, operating calcine ovens, induction furnaces, molten metal pouring and crucible management
  • Proficiency in vacuum tube sampling of bullion
  • Experience in use of XRF; optional
  • Deep understanding of security protocols - CCTV monitoring, alarm systems, and strict access controls
  • Must have a current Police Clearance certificate.
  • Must have a valid PNG drivers licence Class 3 or 6.

The above role is Hidden Valley Site based.

Company Description: The Hidden Valley mine is an open pit gold and silver mine, situated in the Morobe province in Papua New Guinea, some 210km northwest of Port Moresby and approximately 90km south-southwest from Lae, the capital of the province. The mine is located at elevations between 2 800m and 1 700m above sea level within steep mountainous and forested terrain that experiences approximately 3m of rainfall per year. The major gold and silver deposits of Hidden Valley are located in the Morobe Granodiorite of the Wau Graben. Crushed ore is conveyed from the Hidden Valley pit via a 3.8km long overland pipe conveyor and is treated at the Hidden Valley processing plant, which uses a two stage crushing circuit followed by a SAG mill, gravity, CCD/Merril Crowe circuit for silver and carbon-in-leach circuit for the gold.
