We are seeking to recruit a Drill & Blast Engineer for our Mine Technical Services Department. Reporting to Senior Drill & Blast Engineer, the successful applicant will ensure the effective completion of all drill and blast activities consistent to short-term mine planning activities for day-to-day operations. This including scheduling, reconciliation, reporting, conducting of meetings and supervision of junior drill and blast engineers. Critical to this role is also to provide designs that will minimise ore dilution and implement blasting practice that will minimise wall damage while at the same time providing sufficient blasted stocks for digging. Adherence to all statutory requirements and Company Safety, Health and Environment standards and procedures is paramount to this role.

Key roles and responsibilities include:

  • Develop and ensure the continuous improvement of safety best practice in line with Harmony Safety Policy and Systems.
  • Ensure all activities complies with Harmony’s Environmental Policies and Procedures.
  • Punctual attendance to shift, daily and weekly meetings.
  • Provide effective planning and implementation of the daily operations, including daily and weekly drill and blast schedules and plans & liaise with blasting contractors to effectively implement the blasting plans.
  • Develop and promote a culture of continuous improvement in drill and blast engineering strategies, procedures and practices.
  • Actively participate in all departmental activities, including skills training, departmental communications or tool-box meetings and other activities as required by supervisor.
  • Liaise with Short Term Planning, Drill & Blast Supervisors, Dispatch, Geology, Survey, Geotech and Production Personnel to ensure adequate supply of broken stock for digging.
  • Provide information on all areas of this section to drill and blast operations and engineering groups through reports and meetings as required on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, or as otherwise required by the supervisor.
  • Review and development of Safe Working Procedures (SWPs), standards and templates and making sure that it is consistent and relevant.
  • Safely & actively participates in incident investigations, ICAMs and assist in development of JSEAs.
  • Produce two weekly drill and blast schedule for all the production rigs and timely and clearly presentation of the schedule and blasting plan at the weekly mine planning meetings.
  • Clearly identify risks and come up with mitigation actions to minimise impacts to the D&B plans.
  • Carry out blast trials and other improvement projects and report findings and recommendations. Identify weekly and daily risks to drilling and blasting plans and come up with mitigation plans without deviating from the mining plans.
  • Carry out QAQC activities and produce reports on the findings.
  • Mentoring of graduate engineer and supporting industrial trainees, Supporting Senior Mine Engineer & Lead in safety initiatives

Qualifications, Skills and Experience required:

  • A Minimum of 2 years’ engineering experience in the mining industry
  • Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Engineering
  • Ability to read and understand drilling plans
  • Must be a Team Player
  • Abel to Articulate mine plans to non-technical personnel
  • Ability to communicate in English and Tok Pisin
  • Open Pit Blasting experience preferable
  • Computer literate in MS Word and Excel Advanced, Mining Software (Surpac, DESWIK, MineSight, Vulcan or Auto Cad)
  • Persuasive verbal communication skills
  • Must have Class 3 and 6 PNG Driving License

Company Description: The Hidden Valley mine is an open pit gold and silver mine, situated in the Morobe province in Papua New Guinea, some 210km northwest of Port Moresby and approximately 90km south-southwest from Lae, the capital of the province. The mine is located at elevations between 2 800m and 1 700m above sea level within steep mountainous and forested terrain that experiences approximately 3m of rainfall per year. The major gold and silver deposits of Hidden Valley are located in the Morobe Granodiorite of the Wau Graben. Crushed ore is conveyed from the Hidden Valley pit via a 3.8km long overland pipe conveyor and is treated at the Hidden Valley processing plant, which uses a two stage crushing circuit followed by a SAG mill, gravity, CCD/Merril Crowe circuit for silver and carbon-in-leach circuit for the gold.
