We are seeking to recruit a Geotechnical Engineer for our Mine Technical Services Department. Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, the successful applicant will manage the geotechnical monitoring programme and system and ensure that the geotechnical data is sufficient to provide an adequate understanding of ground behaviour across the mine site. Provide a geotechnical contribution to developing mining plans while ensuring adherence to all statutory requirements and Company Safety, Health and Environmental standards and procedures.

Key roles and responsibilities include:

  • Implement and uphold the Harmony SE, Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP)
  • Conduct daily inspections of pits and dumps, and regular inspections of infrastructure, camps, and access roads.
  • Accurately record all observations in the designated database and generate detailed reports for stakeholders.
  • Infrastructure/Camp/Access road inspections have to be carried out on regular bases. All observations/data to be captured in database and reports are generated for appropriate stakeholders.
  • Report all fall of ground and implement necessary controls with mine operations. This must be communicated to Pit Supervisors, Mine Operation Superintendents and the Senior Geotechnical Engineer or Geotechnical Superintendent.
  • Weekly and Monthly updates of geotechnical hazard maps and communicate to stakeholders. (Present weekly activity plots at production meetings, and provide timely advice to the Hidden Valley short term plans (STP) in the mine schedule).
  • Oversee the geotechnical monitoring program, including the collection, processing, and management of data from prisms, radar, piezometers (VWP), extensometers, and telemetry systems.
  • Perform daily analysis of monitoring data to identify ground movement trends.
  • Compile slope-monitoring report and communicate to appropriate stakeholders. Daily/Weekly/Monthly – includes prism, radar, vibrating wire piezometers (VWP), surface extensometer, rainfall and seismic performances.
  • Complete and implement slope depressurisation programme for horizontal drilling plan/design, supervision and scheduling. These includes, collar design, wall sign off for safe drilling and pad preparation, supervision of plumbing wet horizontal holes and drainage plans as well as flow rate readings.
  • Ensure daily rig inspections are carried out and daily drill meter rates are recorded. The rig inspection should be treated as a SBO and entered in to Integrum system.
  • Design and complete pit wall mapping programme for geotechnical slope reconciliation to validate structural geological and rock mass model and report any design non-conformance for actioning.
  • Assist the Senior Geotechnical Engineer in diamond drilling programs and field data collection
  • Attend to night call-out events/times from mine Dispatch. Ensuring the slope monitoring TARP Report is issued and TARP is activated and communicated to stakeholders.
  • Ensure hydrogeological model is validated and updated on monthly basis.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience required:

  • A minimum of 4 years of operational geotechnical experience, preferably in an open-cut mining environment.
  • Bachelor of engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering Mining Engineering or related Earth science fields.
  • Demonstrable commitment to safety
  • Must be efficient and self-starter, a keen interest in learning, willingness to propose new ideas for business improvement
  • Must be experienced in Surpac, Deswik and Quikslope applications and Groundprobe slope stability radar application and Telemetry systems will be considered advantageous
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must have Class 3 or 6 PNG Driving License

Company Description: The Hidden Valley mine is an open pit gold and silver mine, situated in the Morobe province in Papua New Guinea, some 210km northwest of Port Moresby and approximately 90km south-southwest from Lae, the capital of the province. The mine is located at elevations between 2 800m and 1 700m above sea level within steep mountainous and forested terrain that experiences approximately 3m of rainfall per year. The major gold and silver deposits of Hidden Valley are located in the Morobe Granodiorite of the Wau Graben. Crushed ore is conveyed from the Hidden Valley pit via a 3.8km long overland pipe conveyor and is treated at the Hidden Valley processing plant, which uses a two stage crushing circuit followed by a SAG mill, gravity, CCD/Merril Crowe circuit for silver and carbon-in-leach circuit for the gold.
