We are seeking a skilled Hydrographer to join our MTS – Environment Department. Reporting to the Senior Hydrologist, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the site’s hydrology and environmental monitoring programs. This position focuses on managing hydrographic data, maintaining monitoring infrastructure, and providing technical expertise to minimise environmental impacts and ensure effective implementation of the company’s Environmental Management System (EMS).
Key roles and responsibilities include:
- Manage and analyse hydrological and environmental data to provide timely, accurate information to support site decision‑making, regulatory compliance, and continuous environmental improvement.
- Construct, operate, and maintain automated and remote water‑quality monitoring stations.
- Perform streamflow measurements using hydrographic instrumentation such as Flow Tracker and ADCP technology.
- Process, validate, and manage hydrological datasets, including the use of Hydstra.
- Install, calibrate, and maintain meteorological stations (AWS) and associated sensors.
- Ensure all hydrological monitoring programs are delivered on schedule and to required quality standards to meet regulatory and internal requirements.
- Contribute to the design, refinement, and implementation of hydrology and water‑quality monitoring programs.
- Support the implementation of the site Environmental Management Plan (EMP) to meet statutory and company obligations.
- Apply and uphold company Health and Safety systems, procedures, and policies to minimise risk to personnel and contractors.
- Provide technical hydrology and monitoring advice to site management to ensure accurate reporting and compliance with regulatory requirements
Qualification, Skills and Experience required;
- Tertiary qualification in Hydrology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in hydrography or hydrological/environmental monitoring.
- Demonstrated experience in the design, implementation, and maintenance of hydrological and water‑quality monitoring programs.
- Proficiency in hydrological data management systems (Hydstra advantageous).
- Strong computer literacy and ability to work with data‑intensive software and instrumentation.
- Team‑focused attitude with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups.

Company Description: The Hidden Valley mine is an open pit gold and silver mine, situated in the Morobe province in Papua New Guinea, some 210km northwest of Port Moresby and approximately 90km south-southwest from Lae, the capital of the province. The mine is located at elevations between 2 800m and 1 700m above sea level within steep mountainous and forested terrain that experiences approximately 3m of rainfall per year. The major gold and silver deposits of Hidden Valley are located in the Morobe Granodiorite of the Wau Graben. Crushed ore is conveyed from the Hidden Valley pit via a 3.8km long overland pipe conveyor and is treated at the Hidden Valley processing plant, which uses a two stage crushing circuit followed by a SAG mill, gravity, CCD/Merril Crowe circuit for silver and carbon-in-leach circuit for the gold.
