We are currently seeking to recruit a Tailings Facility Construction Engineer for our Project Services Department. Reporting to the Senior Civil Engineer, the primary objective of this role is to manage the quality assurance systems to ensure that design specifications are archived during the construction of the Hidden Valley Tailings Dams. Provide an engineering contribution to the development of Construction Methods Statements, TSF access ramps designs and quality control for construction while ensuring adherence to all statutory requirements and Company Safety, Health and Environment standards and procedures.
Key roles and responsibilities include:
- Ensure effective implementation of safety basics including safety meetings, workplace inspections, and use of Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) systems and coaching field staff for continuous improvement.
- Maintain a TSF Construction OH&S register and ensure all identified risk management actions are implemented in a timely and effective manner.
- Ensure the field crew and contractors are familiar with shift work plans, Dam QA/QC requirements, JSEAs, Construction Method Statements and safe work procedures as well as their duty of care and personal accountability.
- Attend and actively participate in the Project Services and daily pre-start and safety meetings ensuring that effective safety systems are in place to ensure all matters raised are recorded and promptly addressed.
- Ensure the TSF Construction long-term targets are understood and achieved through planning, scheduling and strategy implementation.
- Guide decision making while ensuring that employees are empowered to make decisions on issues within their competency. Monitor decision quality, checking for adherence to policies and standards and coaching for improvement.
- Encourage employees to investigate and trial new ideas, methods and technologies to ensure continuous improvement throughout the operation.
- Monitor and schedule all miscellaneous earthworks projects and repairs / remedial works to enhance the TSF Construction.
- Maintain open and regular communication with all departments and management.
- Liaise with the field crew and earthworks contractor to ensure all performance criteria are met daily during construction through the effective use of Non Conformance Reports (NCR)
- Monitor Project expenditure on maintenance and consumables. Ensure that daily hired equipment hours are verified and accounted for all the work performed in the TSF to ensure cost targets are achieved.
- Coordinate the dumping of organics and other wastes on the Valley View Dump and ensure dump design is achieved.
- Assist with development, monitoring and maintaining standards and policies for the TSF Construction.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience required:
- Bachelor of Civil Engineering
- Minimum of 4 years relevant civil and geotechnical experience in earthworks construction or mining environment
- Strong computer literacy skills in Microsoft & Mining software – Deswik
- Current PNG Class 3 or 6 Driving Licence
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills
- High level of planning, analytical and problem solving skills
- Well-developed facilitation skills
- Visible leadership with a flair for training and mentoring
- Ability to think and plan strategically

Company Description: The Hidden Valley mine is an open pit gold and silver mine, situated in the Morobe province in Papua New Guinea, some 210km northwest of Port Moresby and approximately 90km south-southwest from Lae, the capital of the province. The mine is located at elevations between 2 800m and 1 700m above sea level within steep mountainous and forested terrain that experiences approximately 3m of rainfall per year. The major gold and silver deposits of Hidden Valley are located in the Morobe Granodiorite of the Wau Graben. Crushed ore is conveyed from the Hidden Valley pit via a 3.8km long overland pipe conveyor and is treated at the Hidden Valley processing plant, which uses a two stage crushing circuit followed by a SAG mill, gravity, CCD/Merril Crowe circuit for silver and carbon-in-leach circuit for the gold.
