IT Systems Administrator

Pacific Adventist University (PAU) is owned and operated by the South Pacific Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The institution is accredited to the Adventist Accreditation Association, an international denominational authority for all tertiary and graduate educational programs and institutions owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church entities. The main campus is located on the pristine Koiari Park, 14 miles outside Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. The institution was established in 1984. Since then, it has grown from a college of 20 students, to a university of over 1000 students from across the Pacific.
The Role:
The IT Systems Administrator is responsible for maintaining and supporting the University’s IT infrastructure, systems, and applications to ensure their availability, security, and performance. services, and network management to support teaching, learning, research, and administrative functions. The IT Systems Administrator manages, monitors, troubleshoots, optimises and maintains systems across the University enterprise architecture. This role helps resolve and escalate technical problems. Providing escalation support to the service team is an ongoing requirement of this role. Reporting to the IT Operations & Infrastructure Manager, the role provides technical expertise in systems administration, cloud.
Core Responsibilities:
- Install, configure, and maintain servers, operating systems (Windows & Linux), and enterprise applications.
- Administer Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
- Manage virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V) and storage systems (SAN).
- Oversee backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity processes.
- Ensure system documentation, standards, and procedures are maintained
- Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot LAN/WAN, Wi-Fi, and firewall infrastructure.
- Administer and secure network hardware, including switches, routers, and firewalls (Cisco, FortiGate).
- Implement and enforce security controls, patch management, and compliance policies.
- Respond to and resolve system or network security incidents
- Administer and support Microsoft Office 365 and cloud-based services.
- Manage Citrix environments and Microsoft Cloud applications.
- Support ERP systems, databases, and university-specific applications.
- Liaise with vendors for upgrades, licensing, and technical support.
- Assist the IT Operations & Infrastructure Manager with capacity planning and infrastructure improvements.
- Contribute to IT projects, process improvements, and digital transformation initiatives.
- Support IT governance, compliance, and alignment with the University’s goals.
About you:
Qualifications and Skills required:
- Qualification in ICT, with a high level of knowledge gained through ongoing professional development and training with at least 2 years of corporate experience in ICT or 3 years equivalent work experience, with at least 1 year in a systems administrator capacity.
- Experience managing ERP systems and databases (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle).
- Knowledge of ITIL framework and service management practices.
- Exposure to other cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud).
- Experience with Microsoft Entra ID and Office 365.
- Demonstrable an understanding of network hardware, protocols and standards, including SAN, switches, routers, firewalls, etc.
- Ability to work autonomously under pressure with tight deadlines and establish appropriate frameworks to ensure sound operational service delivery.
- Good attention to detail.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to diagnose complex issues quickly.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Good understanding of the University’s mission, goals, and objectives, and ability to align IT services to support them.
