The New Porgera Limited now has a vacancy for a qualified and experienced individual to join our Commercial and Contract Services Department as Lawyer – Commercial Services.
About the role
Reporting to the Head of Legal, the successful applicant will join a dynamic team and will be responsible for assisting with providing advice to management and the mine’s various departments across site. The successful applicant must have a strong character and must be committed to confidentiality and ensuring statutory and internal company policy compliance. It is essential that the successful applicant is motivated and committed to achieving team objectives.
In this role, you will
- Conduct and support litigation under the supervision of the Head of Legal, particularly at the District Court level.
- Provide legal assistance and advice to site-based functions on routine matters, including HR issues, Mining Safety Act compliance, and otherlegal queries.
- Review and support preparation of low-risk, low-value contracts (e.g., donations, agreements with local landowners).
- Attend and support site teams during inspections by regulatory authorities or audits.
- Assist the Supply Chain team with vendor compliance and “know your customer” (KYC) processes.
- Prepare legal memoranda and conduct research as directed by the Head of Legal.
- Engage with the community and other internal / external stakeholders where directed by the Head of Legal;
- Assist with the development, implementation and maintenance of safe work procedures and promote high safety and health awareness;
- Promote and comply with NPL’s PNG Occupational Health and Safety policies; and
- Ensure the appropriate facilitation of procedures and workforce competence to achieve legal compliance, incident prevention and the achievement of tasks in an environmentally sustainable manner
- Maintain a high level of health and safety awareness and comply with NPL Occupational Health & Safety Policy and all health rules and procedures
About You
To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience

The position requires a high energy individual, hands-on management style and desire to continuously improve you and your team’s knowledge and systems and methods of work.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB)
- Admitted to practice law in Papua New Guinea and holds a current practicing or has the ability to obtain a PNG practising certificate;
- 3-5 years of experience in commercial, corporate or employment law (preferably with experience in the resource sector);
- Commercial litigation experience at the District and National Courts of PNG;
- Strong knowledge of labour, employment, commercial, and contract law;
- Experience in dispute resolution, managing litigation files and exposure to mediation would be an advantage;
- Holds a valid driver’s licence;
- The ability to work honestly and transparently with minimal supervision and be of sober habits;
- An excellent command of English and Tok Pisin, both written and spoken and must be willing to work with and engage with the community; and
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel & Power Point.
Mobilization Requirement
This is a PNG National position, a site-based role on a FIFO arrangement with a rotation of 21 days on and 14 days off. Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol screening (to be arranged only for successful candidates after the interview stage), and provide an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months). Candidates must be PNG Nationals and available to start immediately. Females are encouraged to apply.
