About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact

We are looking for a dynamic Lead – Agreements Implementation to join our Social Performance Team on Lihir Island, PNG. This exciting opportunity is a residential role on an attractive 5:2 roster.
Reporting directly to the Director of Social Performance Lihir, the Lead - Agreements Implementation will manage community agreement obligations and facilitating agreements between Newmont and the host communities of Lihir Island. This role is essential for maintaining Newmont’s social license to operate, fostering sustainable community and mine development, and ensuring mutual benefits for all parties involved.

As part of our team, you will

  • Lead community engagement initiatives to reinforce Newmont’s social license, gain community and government support, and strengthen relations.
  • Oversee and coordinate the implementation and tracking of community agreement obligations, addressing challenges to achieve sustainable and long-term benefits for both the community and Newmont’s operations.
  • Manage the execution and ongoing support of the Mine Management Plans (MMP) across accountable areas of Lihir Island, ensuring all obligations are fulfilled.
  • Serve as the secretariat for the Lihir Interim Agreement Committee (IIA), ensuring effective and transparent committee functions.
  • Oversee the resolution of outstanding issues from past agreements by monitoring commitments, engaging stakeholders, developing action plans, and ensuring transparent communication and compliance.
  • Build trust-based relationships with community leaders and stakeholders, foster collaborative partnerships, and integrate community perspectives into decision-making.
  • Ensure transparency and accountability through open communication and systematic reporting in line with Newmont’s ethical and sustainable practices.
    Promote a collaborative culture within the Social Performance team to advance strategic initiatives and achieve positive outcomes for the Lihir host communities.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

You will be a strategic and business-savvy professional with proven experience in bridging business objectives and community interests. You will have a track record of managing complex stakeholder relationships, leading cross-functional teams, and influencing outcomes to achieve sustainable results.


You will also bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications in stakeholder engagement, planning, management, or commercial (essential).
  • Experience in cost management, account reconciliation, and budgeting.
  • PNG National Driver’s License (essential).
  • Actively promote and demonstrate a strong safety culture, leading by example to prioritize the well-being of all stakeholders.
  • Establish trust-based relationships with host communities and stakeholders to support mutual benefits and sustainable engagement.
  • Experience facilitating complex multi-party negotiations with landowners.
  • Ability to find middle ground between business interests and community needs.
  • Knowledge of traditional negotiation protocols in PNG communities.
  • Ability to facilitate resolution of historical grievances.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and collaborate effectively to achieve results.
  • Proficiency in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success in developing team capacity and fostering growth.
  • Proficiency in the MS Office suite, with strong planning, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills to meet deadlines and maintain high-quality standards.
  • Active listening, rapport-building, and conflict resolution abilities to effectively handle diverse stakeholder interactions.

Your work environment

This role is offered on a residential 5:2 roster, based in Newmont’s Lihir townsite community, a gated precinct based on the coastline cliff with magnificent ocean views.

The townsite has Company provided housing (inc. utilities), international school (up to and including Year 10) and a range of recreational facilities including gym, sports club with restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts and playground areas for the kids. There is also a 9-hole golf course on the island! Healthcare services are provided at the Lihir Medical Clinic.

An onsite deli and café provide access to fresh local and imported produce including grocery items, as well as barista-made coffees and freshly baked cakes. The company offers regular shipment of groceries and care packages for townsite residents to access goods not available on the island.

The Lihir fishing and boating clubs offer the opportunity to get out and enjoy the pristine waters and beaches around the island on the weekends.
