About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose
Our Lihir operation in Papua New Guinea is now recruiting for the position of Lead - Health & Hygiene.
As a Lead, you will play a pivotal role in providing visible leadership and setting strategic direction in worker health protection. Your proactive approach will enhance team competency and capacity ensuring that all members are highly skilled and knowledgeable in occupational hygiene practices.
Your expertise will be demonstrated through risk assessment, where you will identify and assess chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards. Using specialized equipment to monitor and control hazardous substances. Data analysis, to ensure regulatory and Newmont compliance. Creating and managing hygiene programs and delivering safety training. Lastly, conducting incident investigation, recommending corrective actions, and communicating findings.

Essential Duties
Among other accountabilities, the Lead - Health & Hygiene will be responsible for:
- Leadership & Development: Lead, coach, and mentor occupational hygiene staff, fostering a culture of learning and professional growth.
- Program Management: Design, implement, and maintain the site’s occupational hygiene management program, including exposure monitoring and reduction.
- Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment: Identify and assess workplace health hazards (chemical, physical, biological, ergonomic, psychosocial) and recommend effective controls.
- Compliance & Technical Expertise: Act as the site’s subject matter expert, ensuring compliance with standards through inspections, audits, and technical guidance.
- Data Analysis & Continuous Improvement: Analyse assessment results, maintain records, and drive the implementation of improvements based on findings and regulatory requirements..
Training & Experience
The preferred holds a bachelor’s degree in occupational health and Hygiene, Science, or an equivalent field, and must be certified as an Occupational Hygienist by a national governing body (or be working towards this certification). In addition to these qualifications, the candidate must have at least five years of demonstrated work experience in the resources industry, including experience in a supervisory capacity.
