About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Purpose
Our Lihir operation is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to join the Human Resources – Technical Training team in the role of Lead – People Training. Reporting to the Director, People Training, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of Training Leads across key operational areas, including Mine Operations, Process Operations, Fleet Maintenance, Fixed Plant Maintenance, Power & Utilities, Health and Safety Training, and Apprenticeships. This role plays a critical part in driving capability development and operational excellence through the delivery of high-quality technical training programs.
About The Role:
The role is responsible for building training strategies and systems that enhance operational capability, safety, and productivity. You will lead a team of Training Leads, collaborate with operational leaders to address skill gaps, ensure training compliance with regulatory and Newmont standards, and drive workforce development through structured career progression programs.
You will play a key role in optimising learning systems, managing training audits, overseeing budgets, and fostering cross-functional collaboration to deliver industry best practices.
About You:
You are a seasoned training professional with a solid foundation in technical training, learning systems, and employee development. You hold a bachelor’s degree and a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (or equivalent), and you bring proven experience in designing and delivering training programs that meet both industry and regulatory standards. Your expertise spans training compliance, curriculum development, learning management systems, and adult learning principles. You are confident in developing Training Matrices, facilitating Train-the-Trainer sessions, and adapting global and regional policies to local contexts. Experience in the mining or heavy industry sectors is highly regarded, along with the ability to engage with key PNG regulatory bodies such as the MRA, NATTB, and DHERST.

- Willingness to work a 22:20 FIFO roster
- Ability to complete a pre-employment medical assessment
- Must provide a valid Police Clearance issued within the last six months
