About the Role

PNGUNRE invites applications from academics with demonstrated expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing for appointment as Lecturer I within the Department of Forestry, School of Natural Resources.

The role contributes to teaching, applied research, and community engagement in support of sustainable forestry, land use planning, environmental management, and climate-related decision-making. The successful appointee will play a key role in integrating geospatial technologies across academic programs and applied research initiatives relevant to Papua New Guinea and the Pacific region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver undergraduate courses in GIS, Remote Sensing, Spatial Analysis, Cartography, and related geospatial subjects, using applied and outcomes-based teaching approaches.
  • Design and supervise practical sessions, laboratory work, and field-based learning activities, including applied mapping and spatial analysis projects.
  • Supervise undergraduate research projects and applied assignments.
  • Contribute to applied and scholarly research in GIS and Remote Sensing, with relevance to forestry, natural resource management, land use, environment, and climate change.
  • Publish research outputs and contribute to conferences, technical reports, or professional forums.
  • Support curriculum development, program review, and continuous quality improvement and accreditation processes.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with government agencies, forestry operators, NGOs, and development partners to support student learning, internships, and collaborative research.
  • Contribute geospatial expertise to community engagement, extension, and capacity-building initiatives.
  • Participate in departmental, school, and university academic governance activities.

Qualifications, Experience & Competency Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Remote Sensing, Geomatics, Geography, Environmental Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Master’s degree (completed or near completion) in GIS, Remote Sensing, Geospatial Science, or an equivalent field.
  • Demonstrated capability in GIS and Remote Sensing software and spatial data analysis (e.g. QGIS, ArcGIS, ERDAS Imagine, Google Earth Engine).
  • Tertiary-level teaching experience or demonstrated potential to teach effectively in a university environment.
  • Applied experience in PNG or Pacific Island contexts is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of UAV/drone mapping, GPS surveying, and spatial database management will be an advantage.
  • Experience with programming or scripting for geospatial analysis (e.g. Python, R, JavaScript) is desirable.
  • Evidence of research activity, publications, or conference presentations in relevant fields.
  • Strong communication skills, analytical ability, and commitment to ethical and sustainable practice.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary academic team.

K51,328.00 – K62,733.00
K56,165.00 – K68,647.00
