About the Role

PNGUNRE invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for appointment as Lecturer – Plant Genetics & Breeding and Biotechnology within the Department of Agriculture, School of Natural Resources, based at the Vudal Campus.

This role contributes to the University’s core academic functions of teaching and learning, research and scholarship, professional engagement, and student support. The successful appointee will deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervise student research, and contribute to applied research and consultancy in plant genetics, breeding, and biotechnology.

The appointee will report to the Head of Department, Agriculture.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver lectures, tutorials, and field-based teaching in Plant Genetics, Plant Breeding, and Biotechnology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student research projects, theses, and dissertations.
• Conduct and publish high-quality research in agricultural sciences, particularly in plant genetics, breeding, and biotechnology.
• Contribute to curriculum development, course coordination, and continuous improvement of teaching programs.
• Provide academic and pastoral support to students and contribute to mentoring and capacity building.
• Engage in consultancy, outreach, and applied research aligned with national agricultural development priorities.
• Participate in departmental, school, and University meetings, committees, and academic governance activities.
• Ensure compliance with University academic regulations, quality assurance standards, and accreditation requirements.
• Prepare and present technical and academic reports as required.
• Undertake other duties as reasonably directed by the Head of Department.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

• Master of Science in Plant Breeding, Plant Genetics, Biotechnology, or a closely related discipline within Agricultural or Plant Sciences.
• A PhD in Plant Genetics, Plant Breeding, Biotechnology, or a related field is highly desirable.
• Minimum of five (5) years’ teaching and/or industry experience in agricultural sciences, plant sciences, or biotechnology.
• Demonstrated experience in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate research (minimum 2–3 years preferred).
• Evidence of research capability and scholarly output, including publications or applied research contributions.
• Strong knowledge of plant breeding systems, genetic improvement, and biotechnology applications in agriculture.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in academic and multidisciplinary environments.
• Commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service to the University and community.
• High standards of professionalism, integrity, and the ability to mentor and support students and junior staff.
