About the Role
PNGUNRE invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced academics for appointment as Lecturer I or Lecturer II in Tourism & Hospitality within the Department of Tourism & Hospitality.
This role places strong emphasis on industry-aligned teaching, work-integrated learning, applied research, and community engagement. The position is designed to ensure tourism and hospitality programs are academically robust, industry-relevant, experiential, and responsive to national and regional development priorities.
The successful appointee will contribute to teaching, research, publication, consultancy, and partnership-building with key industry and government stakeholders, and will report to the Head of Department, Tourism & Hospitality.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver undergraduate courses to first- through fourth-year students in tourism and hospitality disciplines, including hotel operations and management, food and beverage management, and hospitality business management.
- Design, prepare, and deliver timely lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions using sound pedagogical and industry best-practice approaches.
- Supervise and mentor final-year undergraduate research and project work.
- Conduct and publish applied and scholarly research in tourism, hospitality, and related fields.
- Review, propose, and design new courses in line with industry feedback, accreditation requirements, and the University’s course review cycle.
- Establish and maintain strong linkages with industry peak bodies and stakeholders, including PNG Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA), government agencies, research organisations, hotels, tour operators, and hospitality enterprises.
- Support student industry placements, practicum, and work-integrated learning activities.
- Provide academic and technical expertise through the University’s community engagement and outreach programs.
- Mentor and support tutors, technical officers, and graduate cadets in line with departmental and University goals.
- Undertake additional duties as reasonably directed by the Head of Department and the Dean of School.
Qualifications, Experience & Competency Profile
- Master’s degree or PhD in Tourism, Hospitality Management, or a closely related discipline from a recognised university.
- Minimum of two (2) years’ tertiary-level teaching experience as a Lecturer I/II or equivalent, or a doctoral qualification acceptable to the University.
- Significant post-qualification professional experience in tourism, hospitality operations, consultancy, research, or related fields (minimum of six years combined).
- At least two (2) years’ supervisory or management experience in a team environment, preferably within a university or the tourism and hospitality industry.
- Evidence of research activity and/or scholarly publications in tourism, hospitality, or applied development fields is desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise students, manage academic workloads, and engage effectively with industry and community stakeholders.
- Strong leadership, communication, mentoring, and interpersonal skills.
- High standards of professionalism, ethical conduct, punctuality, and commitment to University policies and values.
