About the Role

PNGUNRE invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced academics for appointment as Lecturer I or Lecturer II – Tourism & Travel Industry Management within the Department of Tourism & Hospitality.

This role focuses on teaching, research, consultancy, and community engagement in key areas of the tourism and travel industry, including destination and attraction management, visitor and events management, online reservation systems, and digital and virtual-tour marketing technologies. The position is designed to ensure that tourism programs remain industry-relevant, technologically current, and aligned with national and regional development priorities.

The successful appointee will report directly to the Head of Department, Tourism & Hospitality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, prepare, and deliver lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions to first- through fourth-year undergraduate students.
  • Teach and supervise courses in destination and attraction management, visitor and events management, travel operations, online reservation systems, and digital tourism marketing.
  • Supervise and mentor final-year undergraduate research projects.
  • Conduct regular research in areas of specialisation and disseminate findings through publications in recognised scholarly journals.
  • Review, propose, and design new courses in line with industry partner feedback and the University’s academic review cycle.
  • Establish and maintain strong linkages with industry peak bodies and stakeholders, including the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA), relevant government departments, tourism and hospitality enterprises, and research organisations.
  • Support student industry placements, practicum, and work-integrated learning opportunities.
  • Provide academic and technical expertise through the University’s community engagement and outreach programs.
  • Mentor and support tutors, technical officers, and graduate cadets in alignment with departmental and University goals.
  • Undertake additional duties as reasonably directed by the Head of Department and the Dean of School.

Qualifications, Experience & Competency Profile

  • Master’s degree or PhD from a recognised university in Tourism, Travel Management, Hospitality Management, or a closely related discipline relevant to the courses offered by the Department.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a Lecturer I/II or equivalent tertiary teaching experience, or a doctoral qualification acceptable to the University.
  • Significant post-qualification professional experience in tourism, travel operations, consultancy, research, or related fields (minimum of six years combined).
  • At least two (2) years’ supervisory or management experience in a team environment, preferably within a university or the tourism and hospitality industry.
  • Demonstrated capacity to integrate digital technologies, online reservation systems, and innovative teaching approaches into curriculum delivery.
  • Evidence of research activity and/or scholarly publications is desirable.
  • Strong leadership, communication, mentoring, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • High standards of professionalism, punctuality, ethical conduct, and the ability to model integrity and strong moral values to students and colleagues.
