We are currently seeking a dynamic and experienced Legal Counsel to join our Legal team and lead our efforts in managing the company’s legal interests and matters to minimize risk and ensure compliance with laws.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Legal Counsel is responsible for managing the organisation’s litigation and dispute resolution portfolio, providing legal advice, and safeguarding the company’s legal interests. The role supports the Manager Legal – Litigation and Manager – Commercial Contracts in developing case strategies, overseeing legal proceedings, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The incumbent will also coordinate external counsel and contribute to risk mitigation across the business.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage all litigation and dispute resolution matters involving the company.
  • Develop and implement effective legal strategies to protect organisational interests.
  • Prepare, review, and file court documents, pleadings, and submissions.
  • Represent the company in court, tribunals, and alternative dispute resolution forums as required.
  • Provide clear legal opinions and recommendations on litigation risks and outcomes.
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date database of all litigation matters.
  • Track case progress and ensure deadlines and court requirements are met.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders to gather evidence and prepare case materials.
  • Liaise with courts, regulators, and relevant legal bodies.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for external legal counsel.
  • Instruct, manage, and evaluate external lawyers to ensure quality and cost-effective services.
  • Review legal opinions and ensure alignment with company strategy.
  • Support negotiation of settlements in the company’s best interests.
  • Provide legal advice to business units on litigation exposure and legal risks.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to support decision-making.
  • Review contracts, agreements, and policies to identify potential risks.
  • Support proactive risk mitigation strategies across the organisation.
  • Monitor changes in laws and regulations affecting litigation and business operations.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in developing policies and procedures to reduce litigation risk.
  • Prepare periodic reports on litigation status and legal risks for senior management.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in law with certification from legal training institute.
  • Must be a current Practicing Lawyer in PNG.
  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience.
  • Strong legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • High level of organisation and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Sound understanding of regulatory compliance frameworks.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to work under pressure.
