About the role

Our client, a major Papua New Guinea organisation, is looking for an experienced Litigation Lawyer to join its in-house Legal team in Port Moresby.

Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, you’ll lead and manage all of the organisation’s litigation, arbitration, regulatory disputes, investigations and court matters. You’ll give strategic legal advice, manage external counsel, and protect the business from legal, financial and reputational risk.

What you’ll do

• Manage all court proceedings and disputes
• Develop litigation strategy and give legal risk assessments
• Instruct and manage external law firms and counsel, and keep external legal spend under control
• Review pleadings, affidavits, submissions and settlement agreements
• Represent the organisation in negotiations, mediation and other dispute resolution
• Keep the litigation register and report regularly to Executive Management and the Board
• Support governance, compliance, procurement, employment and commercial matters when disputes arise
• Make sure court orders and legal obligations are carried out on time
• Manage investigations and evidence gathering
• Track changes in legislation and case law that affect the organisation

What you’ll bring

• Bachelor of Laws (LLB)
• Admission as a legal practitioner, with a current practising certificate
• At least 10 years’ post-admission litigation experience, ideally in a large corporate, resources, energy or government setting
• Strong advocacy, dispute resolution and stakeholder management skills
• Strategic thinking, sharp negotiation skills and close attention to detail
• Leadership, resilience and integrity, and the ability to work well under pressure
