About the role

As we enter an exciting period of expansion at K92, we are seeking to add a Manager – Safety to our senior leadership team in PNG. As we continuously improve safety standards across the business to meet the evolving needs of the operation and our people, this role demands an individual who seeks to develop best in class systems and teams, influence and mentor across all levels at site and will grow with the site as new challenges emerge.

The successful applicant for this role will have significant underground mining experience, ideally some exposure to safety roles within developing nations and excellent communication skills as you ensure our safety performance and culture is unmatched.

Key Accountabilities

  • Coach the site management team to ensure deep understanding of their OHS responsibilities and the business benefits of robust OHS strategies and plans.
  • Effectively influence all site managers to drive the reduction of significant injuries and fatality potential across the site.
  • Foster and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement across site in relation to safety standards and behaviors.
  • Provide OHS technical advice and support to site managers, including development and recommendations on safety policy, legislation development and emerging OHS best practice.
  • Establish and maintain health and safety systems and standards.
  • Develop a cohesive team committed to delivering the business objectives.
  • Support change and drive innovation and be able to discern and select appropriate courses of action including intervention as appropriate to resolve differing views and opinions.
  • Articulate direction to employees within the H&S team.
  • Actively promote an environment where all employees are engaged and valued and focussed on the continuous improvement of the business.
  • Identify, select, develop, and retain top talent within the safety team which is required for long term planning and nationalisation.
  • Develop the capability of team members, coach and mentor continuously to identify and advance successors for key departmental role.
  • Ensure operations are conducted in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and company standards.
  • Map risk and expected exposures at a strategic level (epidemic, natural disaster, civil unrest).
  • Review the Crisis and Emergency Management Plan.
  • Oversee training of crisis and emergency management to appropriate groups.
  • Conduct regular and thorough inspections of mine and plant areas to ensure compliance with legislation, safety, and environment standards.

About You

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree or equivalent tertiary qualifications in Safety, Occupational Health or equivalent
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in underground hard rock safety management and/or supervisory roles overseeing multiple functions.
  • Previous experience operating in Papua New Guinea or developing countries in remote locations will be highly regarded.
  • Strong exposure to incident investigation and safety auditing.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing safety systems and strong change management exposure.
  • A sound knowledge of risk management practices and risk-based decision making
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage teams and to timeframes
  • Adaptable, resilient and strong emotional intelligence
  • Understanding of PNG Safety and Health legislation
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office suite.
  • Sound planning, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure and autonomously.
  • Excellent attention to detail and time management skills to meet deadlines.
  • Strong active listening & interpersonal skills for rapport building, conflict resolution & training
