POSITION TITLE: MEDICAL ASSISTANT_HEO
CONTEXT
Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) is a private, non-profit international humanitarian organization, founded in 1971 and working in 70 countries around the world. MSF provides medical assistance to populations in crisis, regardless of race, religion, belief or political affiliation. In PNG, MSF has been working since 2007 in Lae, Taric, Bougainville, Gulf and NCD Provinces. MSF is now working to support the Department of Health to improve access to care for patients in JIWAKA and Highlands.
JOB PROFILE
- Together with the MSF medical doctor, engage in the capacity building of health centre staff and VHVs in Jiwaka Province to comprehensively manage injuries as a result of violence. Assist in follow up coaching for monitoring and evaluation (M/E) which may include providing follow up training sessions.
- Cooperate with the MSF HP/CE Supervisor and build the capacity of the CHWs and VHVs in Jiwaka villages. This will include education around how to identify, provide first aid, and refer survivors of violence to the health facility, including follow up care.
- Collaborate with the Officer in Charge (OIC) and health centre staff, identify and organize the training for the nurses, health extension officers (HEOs), HP officers, CHWs and VHVs in addressing health issues that are present within the community, particularly those concerning violence.
- Collaborate with the MSF Nurse Supervisor and Officer in Charge (OIC) to observe and check the medical drugs/equipment’s are properly used; ensure that the medical drugs are properly stored, correctly inventoried when receiving supply, and promptly documented on administration; identify the potential rupture of medical drugs/items for treating survivors of violence and support the OIC with requesting the supply.
- Together with MSF medical doctor and OIC, develop the tools and monitoring system for SGBV, IPV, DV, SARV and other common diseases.
- Ensuring referral of patients whose health condition requires the consultation of a specialist (e.g. to the doctor for all difficult/complicated cases, to the reference, hospital for emergency hospitalization, in order to ensure the most appropriate health care.
- With competences, establishing medical treatments in the health facilities that MSF supports according to diagnosed pathologies, identifying potential counter-indications of certain medicines, and adapting the doses to patient’s individual needs (age, weight and other particularities) in order to ensure therapy success.
- Ensuring quality triage activities and detecting incoming emergencies, in order to prioritize the provision of medical care to the most severe cases are carried out in the health facilities.
- With competences, ensure that staff at health facilities apply treatment and follow-up activities, according to MSF and National medical and prevention protocols for the survivors of SGBV such as PEP, keep contact with all patients, provide information and explanation regarding their health conditions and treatments.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Essential, medical assistant, Clinical Officer, or Health Extension Officer diploma or required diploma as applicable in PNG. Experience: Essential clinically certified work experience of at least 1 year Language: Fluent in English and Tok Pisin Knowledge: Basic competencies in word and excel are essential |
