Company Overview
Tolu Minerals Limited has successfully completed its exploration phase and is transitioning into underground mining operations in Papua New Guinea, with full-scale production targeted for 2027. This role is part of the build-up of operational capability across the Mobile Maintenance Department as the company moves from development into full operational status.
Job Purpose
Reporting to the Head of Mobile Maintenance, the Mobile Maintenance Superintendent leads the day-to-day execution of mobile equipment maintenance across surface and underground operations at Tolu Minerals. The role is accountable for maintenance team performance, equipment availability and reliability, workshop safety, and the supervision of all mobile maintenance tradespersons. The Superintendent translates the maintenance plan into safe, efficient daily execution and ensures the Mobile Maintenance Department is resourced, trained, and equipped to support the ramp-up to full production in 2027.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, supervise, and coordinate the daily activities of the Mobile Maintenance team, including planners, mechanics, HEF tradespersons, auto electrician, and tyre fitters.
- Drive maintenance execution in line with the maintenance plan and schedule prepared by the Mobile Maintenance Planner, adjusting priorities for breakdowns and operational demands.
- Monitor and report on mobile fleet availability, utilization, and reliability KPIs, identifying root causes of recurring failures and driving corrective actions.
- Ensure all maintenance work, both planned and unplanned, is carried out safely and in compliance with PNG Mine Safety regulations, Tolu Minerals HSE standards, and OEM specifications.
- Supervise workshop and field maintenance crews across surface and underground locations, ensuring adequate shift coverage and resource allocation.
- Manage performance, attendance, and conduct of direct reports, including coaching, performance reviews, and disciplinary processes in line with HR policy.
- Identify and coordinate training and competency development needs for the mobile maintenance workforce, including trade certifications and equipment-specific training.
- Control workshop consumables, spare parts usage, and minor maintenance budgets in coordination with the Senior Planner and Head of Mobile Maintenance.
- Conduct toolbox talks, safety inspections, and incident investigations relating to mobile maintenance activities; ensure timely close-out of corrective actions.
- Liaise with Operations (Drilling, Exploration, Processing/Mill) to coordinate equipment availability against production and exploration schedules.
- Ensure compliance with statutory inspection, registration, and certification requirements for all mobile plant and light vehicles.
- Support the Manager - Mobile Fleet Maintenance in workforce planning, recruitment input, and departmental budgeting as the operation ramps up to full production.
- Champion a strong safety culture and continuous improvement mindset across the Mobile Maintenance Department.
- Provide accurate weekly and monthly reporting of KPI’s and fleet utilisation and availability reports to the Head of Mobile Maintenance.
Qualifications
- Trade certification in Diesel Fitting, Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Automotive Mechanics, or related discipline.
- Supervisory or leadership qualification (e.g. Frontline Management Certificate) preferred.
- Current PNG driver's license; underground mining induction/ticket preferred or willingness to obtain.
- Relevant trade or supervisory qualifications recognized in PNG or equivalent jurisdiction.
Experience
- Minimum 8 years' experience in heavy mobile equipment maintenance, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or superintendent role.
- Prior experience in an underground mining operation strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience managing maintenance teams across multiple trades (mechanical, electrical, tyres).
- Experience with CMMS/maintenance management systems and KPI reporting.
- Experience operating within a PNG mining environment, including familiarity with PNG Mine Safety regulations, is highly advantageous.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership, supervisory, and people management skills.
- Sound technical knowledge of mobile mining equipment, light vehicles, and ancillary plant.
- Strong understanding of maintenance planning principles, breakdown management, and root cause analysis.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills; able to liaise across departments and with senior management.
- Sound understanding of HSE legislation and risk management in an underground mining context.
- Computer literacy, including maintenance management systems and reporting tools.
- Ability to manage competing priorities under pressure, particularly during breakdowns or production-critical periods.
Working Conditions
- Underground and surface mining environment with exposure to heat, humidity, noise, dust, and confined spaces.
- Operates on a fixed roster of 19 days on / 9 days off.
- Required to work shift patterns including day and night shift as rostered.
- Must comply with all Tolu Minerals HSE policies, PNG Mining Safety regulations, and site-specific permit-to-work systems.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory at all times in designated areas.
