The New Porgera Limited now has a vacancy for a qualified and experienced individual to join our Geotech Team - Mine Technical Services Department as an Engineer- Geotechnical - Open Pit.

About the role

Reporting to the Senior Engineer - Geotechnical, the Engineer-Geotech is responsible for providing geotechnical engineering support to ensure the safe, stable, and cost-effective design and operation of open pit mines. The role focuses on slope design, ground control, monitoring, and risk management while supporting mine planning and day-to-day operations.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop, review and maintain open pit slope designs including bench, inter-ramp and overall slope angles.

  • Perform geotechnical analyses to assess slope stability and ground behaviour.

  • Establish and update geotechnical design criteria and ground control standards.

  • Assess the impact of geology, structures, groundwater and mining sequence on pit stability.

  • Design, implement and manage slope monitoring systems (e.g., prisms, radar, piezometers, visual inspections).

  • Interpret monitoring data and provide timely recommendations to manage slope risk.

  • Prepare geotechnical hazard maps, exclusion zones and trigger action response plans (TARPs).

  • Investigate geotechnical instabilities and recommend mitigation measures.

  • Provide day-to-day geotechnical support to open pit mining operations.

  • Participate in daily, weekly and monthly production and planning meetings.

  • Support safe mining practices through regular site inspections and communication.

  • Provide geotechnical inputs into short, medium and long-term mine plans.

  • Support pit optimization studies and pushback designs.

  • Balance safety, technical risk and economic outcomes in geotechnical recommendations.

  • Manage and interpret geotechnical data including core logging, laboratory testing and monitoring results.

  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure geotechnical risks are clearly communicated.

  • Maintain a high level of health and safety awareness and comply with the NPL Occupational Health & Safety Policy and all health and safety rules and procedures

About You

To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experiences:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or related field.

  • Experience in geotechnical engineering within open pit mining operations.

  • Sound understanding of rock mechanics, slope stability, and ground control principles.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Experience working in operational mining environments.

  • PNG National Driver’s License

Mobilization Requirement

This is a PNG National position, a site-based role on a FIFO arrangement with a rotation of 21 days on and 14 days off. Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol screening (to be arranged only for successful candidates after the interview stage), and provide an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months). Candidates must be PNG Nationals and available to start immediately. Females are encouraged to apply.
