The Papua New Guinea University of Technology is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Technical Officer to lead and manage our Mechanical Engineering Workshop. Principal Technical Officer - Workshop

The Principal Technical Officer will be responsible for managing and modernizing the Mechanical Engineering Workshop, ensuring that all tools, equipment, and resources are maintained at optimal levels. The role involves training students and workshop personnel, enforcing safety policies, assisting academic staff with research and student projects, and overseeing the implementation of new workshop technologies and equipment. The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to create a safe and efficient learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Mechanical Engineering Workshop, ensuring efficiency and modernization.
  • Oversee workshop facilities, resources, and supplies to support teaching and research.
  • Maintain and repair tools, equipment, and teaching materials.
  • Provide technical training and mentorship to workshop personnel and students.
  • Enforce safety policies and procedures in compliance with OSHE regulations.
  • Assist academic staff with workshop activities and student projects.
  • Identify and recommend new workshop equipment and technologies.
  • Manage resource planning and project management tools.
  • Monitor and evaluate student projects, providing constructive feedback.
  • Prepare technical reports, quotations, and workshop budgets.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Proficient in handling and maintaining workshop machinery and tools.
  • Experience with CNC machines and CAD/CAM software.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and planning skills.
  • Demonstrated people management abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer literacy and reporting skills.

Conditions of Service

Principal Technical Officer PGK46,556 - PGK56,902 per annum

Domestic Market Allowance PGK6,677 - PGK10,683 per annum

(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)
