Job Overview
The Project Accountant will play a pivotal role in managing the financial aspects of complex projects, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and timely reporting. This role is ideal for a highly skilled finance professional with a background as a Financial Controller or Finance Manager, who brings strong expertise in project management and claims administration. The position requires a balance of technical accounting skills, strategic oversight, and hands-on project involvement.
Responsibilities
- Oversee end-to-end financial operations for assigned projects, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost control.
- Monitor project expenditures against budgets and provide variance analysis.
- Implement and maintain financial policies and procedures across project teams.
- Prepare detailed project financial reports for management and stakeholders.
- Provide insights into project profitability, cash flow, and risk exposure.
- Support decision-making by delivering clear, actionable financial analysis.
- Collaborate with project managers, operations, and senior management to align financial strategies with project goals.
- Communicate complex financial information in clear, accessible language for non-finance staff.
- Oversee preparation, submission, and reconciliation of project-related claims to clients, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Manage internal and external recharges, ensuring proper allocation of costs across departments and projects.
- Track outstanding claims and recharges, follow up for timely settlement, and maintain accurate records.
- Provide clear reporting on claims status, recoveries, and recharge allocations to management.
Skills/Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or equivalent professional qualification preferred.
- Proven experience as a Finance Manager with exposure to project-based accounting.
- Strong knowledge of IFRS and local tax regulations in Papua New Guinea.
- Demonstrated experience in managing claims and recharges within project environments.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate financial data into practical insights.
