What you’ll do:
The SGSC Senior Engineer plays a key role in establishing and strengthening the PNG national-led support centre in Port Moresby.

The role supports the safe, reliable and efficient production of oil and gas by delivering high-quality engineering services across Santos’ portfolio of assets. This includes providing technical stewardship, leading engineering deliverables, and ensuring strong risk management and governance within established systems and processes.

As part of the SGSC engineering support workstream, the Senior Engineer works closely with Santos’ operating assets and support teams, taking a leadership role in the delivery of defined engineering services to a consistently high standard. The role has a strong focus on building PNG technical capability through coaching, mentoring and knowledge transfer, contributing to the long-term sustainability and technical depth of the SGSC engineering team.

SGSC Senior Engineers are expected to demonstrate Santos’ values and apply the LEAP behavioural framework in all aspects of their work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide senior technical support to operations, maintenance, and engineering teams across Santos’ assets, including peer review and advice within delegated authority.
  • Lead the delivery of engineering scopes from problem definition to implementation and close-out, ensuring quality, schedule, and stakeholder alignment.
  • Act as a technical focal point for stakeholders, managing interfaces to deliver timely, accurate, and fit-for-purpose outcomes. Support operational risk management through Management of Change (MOC), hazard and risk assessments, and barrier management.
  • Provide technical stewardship and build capability in the SGSC team through mentoring, coaching, and on-the-job development.
  • Drive business improvement initiatives, including standardisation, technical quality and efficiency improvements, and cost and risk reduction opportunities. Contribute to the development of business plans and processes for the SGSC engineering support workstream.
  • Manage and coordinate daily engineering activities, prioritising work to meet team objectives while maintaining strong discipline compliance.
  • Represent SGSC in internal and external interactions, upholding Santos’ values and behavioural expectations.
  • Support and uphold Santos Health, Safety, and Environmental policies, participating in the implementation of relevant action plans.
  • Ensure compliance with the Santos Management System (SMS), Delegation of Authority (DOA), and corporate governance requirements.
  • Apply industry best practices, standards, and specifications in all engineering activities.

What you’ll bring:
As a Senior Engineer in the SGSC, you bring a combination of deep technical expertise, leadership, and operational insight. You have a strong understanding of engineering principles across your discipline, with awareness of multi-discipline interactions, and are experienced in applying process safety, risk management, and problem-solving in operational environments.

You are confident working with stakeholders across multicultural teams, translating technical issues into clear, actionable recommendations, and fostering an inclusive environment where all team members are respected, valued, and able to contribute. You are self-motivated, adaptable, and proactive in driving technical excellence and operational outcomes.

You are also proficient in computer applications, including MS Office and relevant technical software, enabling effective analysis, reporting, and delivery of engineering solutions.

Essential

  • 10+ years’ experience and a proven track record in technical engineering within the oil and gas or related resources industry, supporting operational and maintenance activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex engineering scopes and provide technical assurance, including review, verification, and approvals within delegated authority.
  • Deep discipline knowledge - Process, Mechanical, or Instrumentation & Electrical Engineering with broad multi-discipline awareness.
  • Strong understanding of process safety, risk management and mitigation.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant technical standards and regulatory frameworks in the oil and gas industry.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary stakeholders in a multicultural, remote-support environment.
  • Ability to lead and communicate effectively – communicate confidently with stakeholders, build effective working relationships and trust across the organisation in a multicultural environment. Ability to translate technical issues into clear options and recommendations for stakeholders at multiple organisational levels
  • Be self-motivated, adaptable and demonstrate high initiative.
  • Proficient computer literacy, particularly in MS Office and relevant technical software.
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Process, Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrumentation/Control) and Chartered Professional Engineer & RPEQ status, or eligibility.

Desired

  • Operational asset experience, including brownfield modifications and shutdown/turnaround support.
  • Experience in project engineering and understanding of project management best practices, or the ability to rapidly develop these skills.
  • Familiarity with Continuous Improvement methodologies and experience using data to inform decision-making.
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of economic principles that apply to Oil and Gas production.
