SENIOR CHEMIST

SGS PNG Limited is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Senior Chemist to join our laboratory team at the Porgera Mine Site. This position plays a critical leadership role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality analytical and assay services that support mining and processing operations.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, maintain laboratory quality systems, mentor laboratory personnel, and drive continuous improvement initiatives while upholding SGS's commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence.

About the Role

The Senior Chemist will be responsible for providing technical and operational leadership within the laboratory to ensure accurate, timely, and reliable analytical results.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead laboratory analytical and assay operations.
• Ensure compliance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation requirements and SGS quality systems.
• Manage quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) programs.
• Monitor laboratory turnaround times and operational performance.
• Coach, mentor, and develop laboratory personnel.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives in safety, quality, and operational efficiency.
• Collaborate with Mine and Mill teams on analytical priorities and quality-related matters.
• Support the implementation of best laboratory practices and technical standards.

About You

Qualifications

• Degree in Chemistry, Applied Science, or a related scientific discipline.

Experience

• Minimum ten (10) years of experience in chemical laboratories.
• Mining industry laboratory experience is highly desirable.
• Demonstrated experience in laboratory leadership and people management.

Technical Knowledge

• Strong knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 laboratory requirements.
• Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and laboratory data systems.
• Practical experience in:
  • Fire Assay
  • Wet Chemistry
  • Sample Preparation
  • LECO Analysis
  • Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS)

• Current First Aid Certificate.
