About the role

This Senior Electrical Engineer will play a key role in the successful delivery of the stage 3 mine expansion for the Kainantu Mine Operation. Reporting to the Project Manager - Projects & Engineering, the Senior Electrical Engineer will provide technical expertise and analysis of the operation of the electrical power system, including generation, sub transmission and reticulation network, HV machinery and aux electrical systems design and construction.

You will be responsible for managing the technical aspects of all electrical projects and ensuring that the projects are delivered on time, within budget and to the required design/electrical standards. The Senior Electrical Engineer will work closely with the project managers, Contractors, engineering and consultants to develop and implement project plans, schedules and budgets, and will also be responsible for managing the day-to-day technical aspects of all power and electrical projects.

Key / Major Accountabilities

Key accountabilities of this position include.

  • Ensure integrity of protection and earthing system design
  • Provide recommendations for design and maintenance of electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear etc.
  • Act as K92 representative for electrical HV design, equipment selection, sizing, etc, for projects
  • Ownership of K92 site fault study & protection reports and reviews
  • Ownership of K92 site load management philosophy reports and reviews
  • Delivers work within approved budget managing any variances in accordance with escalation process.
  • Lead all electrical engineering matters including design changes and development, engineering reviews, construction reviews, acceptance of site changes, compliance with codes and standards.
  • Manage the electrical engineering change register.
  • Oversee the development of electrical engineering project briefs, technical specifications, and designs including drawings and bill-of-quantities.
  • Carry out technical and feasibility studies and draw up blueprints that satisfy technical specifications.
  • Conduct on site investigations and analyze data (maps, reports, tests, drawings and other).
  • Takes an active role in promoting the training and development.
  • Responsible for project design, developing scope of works, work schedule and QA/QC.
  • Provides support for project costing and justification.
  • Manages department budgeting and forecasting.
  • Provides timely and accurate departmental reporting to stakeholders. Overseeing and maintaining all electrical documentation and records. These include equipment specifications, data sheets, as-build drawings, scope of works, change of management, and report writing.
  • Carry out engineering study, estimates, prepare technical drawings, P&IDs, E&I Schematics/SLDs, and specifications, procurement, and ensure installation conform to approved standards, project requirements, and safe operational requirements.
  • Delivers work within approved budget managing any variances in accordance with escalation process.
  • Ensure project activities are conducted in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and company standards.
  • Conduct regular and thorough inspections of all project areas to ensure compliance with legislation, safety, and environment standards.
  • Drives and influences proactive safety behaviours within workgroups through visible leadership.
  • Plans work so that it can be conducted safely, considers environmental conditions, nearby activities, people and other resources needed to complete the work.
  • Ensure health and safety, and environmental performance meets or exceeds company and regulatory requirements.
  • Actively promote initiative-taking safety behaviours and leading by example

About You

To be considered for this role, you must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong character who is prepared to make hard decisions and deliver results. In addition to this, you will have the following.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognised University.
  • Must be a Registered Engineer and hold the class of Member of the Institute of Engineers PNG or eligible for registration within 6 months is essential.
  • High Voltage switching accreditation desirable.
  • Certificate in Workplace Assessment and Training or similar desirable.
  • 15 + years’ experience in leading electrical engineering matters on design and engineering, procurement, construction of major projects.
  • Competent with power simulation design software (Digsilent Power Factory/PSCAD or similar).
  • Competent with HV protection systems and studies and power system operations, stability and control.
  • Must be familiar with the production of switching sheets, access, and test permits.
  • Must be familiar with Power Station Systems, Power Distribution Networks, Renewable Technology or Diesel Power Systems.
