Lihir Operation is a tier-one open cut mining operation based on Aniolam island, in the Lihir Group of Islands, located in New Ireland Province approximately 800km north of Port Moresby. It is one of the world’s largest producing gold mines and is located on a geothermally active extinct volcanic crater. Production first commenced in 1997. The operation consists of an open pit mine producing refractory ore, which is treated using pressure oxidation before the gold is recovered by a conventional leach process.

About this Role

Reporting to the Superintendent – Reliability this role is key to minimising equipment downtime and providing highly technical experience in pressure plant integrity.

As an expatriate, you will play a critical role in the ongoing development of the team, in support of Newmont’s commitment to developing our national and local workforce.

This role will be working a 22:20 roster and is offered on a 2-year Fixed Term-Full time basis.

Your role will consist of:

  • Develop risk-based inspection strategies
  • Develop the integrity management and inspection strategies for pressure systems, pipelines and tanks
  • Review, assess and update the integrity management and inspection data for pressure systems, pipelines and tanks
  • Provide effective technical advice to Inspectors and Engineers, ensuring threats are evaluated, procedures are followed, and work is completed in accordance with the company technical procedures
  • Organise and or conduct Fitness for service assessments for piping, tanks and pressure vessels
  • Ensure any actions arising from inspection activities are fully reported and communicated
  • Maintain temporary Repair registers and ensures plans are in place to execute permanent repairs
  • Develop repair scopes for pressure vessels and provide guidance and advice to other Engineers to develop repair scope
  • Perform effective review of inspection data, results trending and provide recommendations for repair and replacement methodologies
  • Perform root cause analysis and failure investigation on systems and equipment
  • Provide timely and accurate reports informing Client of anomalies and recommend actions to be taken
  • Co-ordinate and participate in periodic plant and equipment history reviews
  • Provide coaching, guidance and development to Engineers
  • Drives and influences proactive safety behaviours

Your training, skills and experience checklist

Here is what we would need so see from you!

  • Extensive experience working in a large-scaled mining or heavy industrial environments
  • Proven experience working as a Senior Engineer in Asset Integrity and providing coaching and guidance
  • Tertiary Qualifications in Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline
  • Working knowledge of the following codes, standards, and systems: API570 Piping Inspection code, API510 Pressure Vessel Inspection Code, AS1210 Pressure Vessels, AS3788, Pressure equipment – In-service Inspection, API653, Tanks - Inspection, repair, alteration, and reconstruction
  • Advanced experience proficiency with Microsoft office suite
  • Must hold or willing to obtain a IEPNG Membership
  • Advanced information monitoring and management skills
  • Advanced planning, organising and prioritising skills
  • Sound planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent attention to detail and time management skills to meet deadlines
  • Be able to work a FIFO roster in PNG
  • Ability to complete a pre-employment medical assessment
  • Must be able to complete a National Police Check & Navex Risk Rate Screening
  • Ability to satisfy all requirements for PNG Work Permit and Visa

Working conditions and location

This role is offered on a 22:20 Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster from Australia to Lihir Island.
