About the Role

PNGUNRE invites applications from senior academics with demonstrated expertise in Natural Resources Management for appointment as Senior Lecturer within the Department of Forestry, School of Natural Resources.

This role provides academic and professional leadership in teaching, research, and community engagement, with a focus on the sustainable management of forests, land, water, and biodiversity. The successful appointee will contribute to curriculum leadership, staff mentoring, applied research, and stakeholder engagement aligned with national forestry and environmental priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver and coordinate undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Natural Resources Management, Forestry Policy, and Sustainable Development, using applied and outcomes-based teaching approaches.
  • Provide leadership in curriculum design, review, and accreditation, ensuring programs remain current, relevant, and aligned with national and institutional standards.
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research, including field-based and applied projects.
  • Conduct and publish applied and scholarly research in areas such as sustainable forestry, forest ecology, natural resource governance, climate change, and conservation.
  • Lead and contribute to research grant development and collaborative research initiatives.
  • Mentor and support junior academic staff, contributing to faculty development and academic succession planning.
  • Support departmental administration, strategic planning, and academic governance activities.
  • Build and maintain effective partnerships with government agencies, forestry companies, NGOs, and development partners to support teaching, research, and extension activities.
  • Contribute to community outreach and extension services, promoting sustainable and culturally appropriate natural resource management practices.

Qualifications, Experience & Competency Profile

  • PhD in Forestry Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, or a closely related discipline from a recognised university.
  • Minimum of 5–7 years’ teaching and research experience at tertiary level, with demonstrated capability appropriate to Senior Lecturer appointment.
  • Strong disciplinary background in sustainable resource management, forestry policy, environmental governance, and community-based management.
  • Demonstrated research track record, including peer-reviewed publications and involvement in funded research projects.
  • Proven ability to provide academic leadership, mentoring, and supervision in a university environment.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working in multidisciplinary and multicultural contexts.
  • High standards of integrity, professionalism, accountability, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Commitment to integrating traditional knowledge with contemporary forestry and resource management practices.

Salary Range

Senior Lecturer
K73,182.00 – K89,445.00
(plus applicable allowances and benefits)
