SENIOR SAFETY OFFICER

The Role

Reporting to the Manager Health, Safety and Environment, the incumbent would be responsible for providing health and safety advice, safety training and support to Woodlark Operations site including contract partners.

This is a FIFO position on 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off roster. Preferred Points of Hire are Woodlark, Alotau, Port Moresby, Lae, Goroka and Madang.

Key roles and responsibilities include

  • Ensuring own Health & Safety as well as that of all other workers, identifying and maintaining safe work practices and completing all required safety training.
  • Providing support to the Site Manager in the communication and effective operation of the health and safety components of the Company’s Health & Safety Management System across Woodlark Operations.
  • Delivering effective Safety training in accordance with WML requirements, the requirements of the Papua New Guinea Mining Relations and other regulatory bodies applicable including Australian COP’s as directed.
  • Conducting general site induction training as requested.
  • Establishing the Standards and Procedures for all work tasks and ensuring personnel work to appropriate standards or procedures to prevent as reasonably practical accidents, injuries and other forms of loss.
  • Actively promoting, monitoring and enforcing compliance of personnel with safe work practices and promote high safety and health awareness
  • Providing timely and appropriate Emergency Response services to Woodlark Operations.
  • Contributing to the collection, storage and interpretation of reliable health, safety and training data.
  • Contributing to effective internal and external health and safety reporting.
  • Providing health, safety and emergency response related advice to all site personnel some situations will require after hours on call work.
  • Supporting the Site Manager to improve understanding of health, safety and emergency response requirements across Woodlark Operations.
  • Assist operational Supervisors in the writing of JSEA for practical tasks in moderate or high-risk categories.
  • Leading site health and safety investigations as and when required.
  • Conduct audit of site safety performance and plan to address gaps.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience required

  • Display behavior consistent with GeoPacific Values
  • Current valid PNG Driver’s Licence
  • Minimum – Certificate/Diploma in Work, Health & Safety
  • Certificate IV Training & Assessment
  • An excellent knowledge of Safety and Risk systems and proven experience in establishing and implementing systems
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a senior role
  • At least 4 years of mine construction and/or mine site safety experience
  • An excellent knowledge of Safety and Risk systems and proven experience in establishing and implementing systems
  • Strong ability to work effectively with people
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing and communication skills, as well as time management and a high level of enthusiasm
  • Knowledge of the statutory requirements of the role
  • Demonstrated a high level of computer literacy (MS Office, HSE and Training management systems)
  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Incident investigation qualification (ICAM, Tap Root or similar)
  • Supervisor experience and/or qualifications
